MITHUN CHAKROBORTY

THE BENGALI BABU

As a journalist I must admit that it is an opportunity of lifetime to sit with Gourango Chakroborty the superstar, popularly known as Mithun Chakroborty in Bollywood and Bengali Babu in West Bengal. In spite of the hot sweating atmosphere he took out 5 mins to talk to me and that was enough from a person who had come to Kolkata with his entire family, an actor to bag up 3 National Awards, still humble and bound to Earth.

Dada how are you feeling to be at Kolkata with your entire family?
I am extremely happy, only because Satabrata Mukherjee my brother, friend and much more, he has invited my family and me and that’s why I am here with Jogeeta, Mimho, Rimho, Namashi and Deshani. Kolkata is my life and I am always bound it. So I keep coming back again and again for shooting or personal work.

Q. What are your next films?
I am doing four films, and GURU of Mani Ratnam is ready to hit the screen.

Q. How was it working with Abhisekh and Aishwariya?
I call Abhisekh my son, Mimoh and Abhi are almost same age, I have seen Abhi grow so working with him is same that Amitabh Ji feels while working with him. Ash is a cute and beautiful girl. She knows how to respect and be sincere to work, and I found the same in her.

Q. You played the lead role in Bengali and Hindi Guru and again Mani Ratnam’s Guru?
No this time I am not the Guru, its Abhisekh who is the Guru out here at Mani’s film.

Q. Working with Mani Ratnam any comments?
Genius director.

Q. Mimho is Ma ka Beta or Papa ka Beta?
Mimho might look like Jogeeta but his body language is that of mine. So he is beta for both of us.

Q. Any plans to come behind the camera?
Not yet decided but lets’ see.

Q. Are you comfortable acting bed or close scenes with heroines?
Difficult, as my co-actress might not like me, I might not like her but still we have to do, we are professionals. These things should not be taken into consideration.

Q. Peoples’ taste for films have changed they donot want intellectual movies?
Partly, generation has changed, ‘Mrigaya’ and ‘Nadi Theka Sagore’ is no more there I also have converted myself to an entertainer but still I feel people should accept art films. Even my character is arty in Kalpurush and another off beat film of Samir Chandra ‘Nadir Naam Anjana’, will see me in off beat role.

Q. Your pair with Chumki Di(Debhoshree) is fantastic?
Yes we have grown up together Debhosree and I did ‘Nadi Theke Sagore’, ‘Trai’, and at this age ‘Fatakeshto’, ‘Judho', 'Abhimonu’ etc may many, we are very good friends.

Q. Lastly control over your life?
Fully, no late night parties, drinks and smoking has been reduced and fitness, exercise, doctors verdict is being maintained truly.

He ended with saying “Choto Journalist Boro Kotha. I wish you success in your life thank you”.

Even I ended up saying thank you Sir I mean Dada.

Mithun Chakravarthy’s son Mimoh will mark his debut with Raj Sippy’s Jimmy. Interestingly Jimmy was Mithun’s screen name in his biggest hit Disco Dancer. “It just happened unknowingly. It wasn’t a planned move to name the film after my father’s character Jimmy in Disco Dancer. But then we realized that it might just work as a plus point too”, comments Mimoh

And even before the release of his debut film, Mimoh has his hands full for the next few months. “I am doing four more films besides Jimmy”, Mimoh sounds excited. The first film will be directed by Shammi Kapoor’s son Aditya Raj Kapoor and is titled India Rocks. Aditya’s debut film Don’t Stop Dreaming starring singer Taz (of Stereo Nation fame) with Rishi Kapoor (Aditya’s cousin) released recently in US and disappeared without a trace.

However Mimoh is quite charged about Aditya’s first Hindi feature film. “I am playing the role of a young boy who works in London as a sweeper and subsequently he becomes a superstar. It’s a musical film and emphasizes a lot on dance and music”. Mimoh is lucky to romance two girls in this film. It will introduce Miss England 2006, Eleanor Glynn in a prominent role. The other leading lady is Riya Sen. “Basically it’s a journey of a man and how this British girl comes in his life.” India Rocks is produced by Sudhir Mukherjee under the Filmalaya banner. The film will go on floors in May and will be shot in London.

Meanwhile Mimoh has already completed his second film with Raj Sippy titled Hamilton Palace. The film was earlier titled The Murderer. “It’s a murder mystery produced by Salim. Then I am doing a film for Anjum Rizvi called Fast Forward. It has got two heroes and two heroines, but the cast isn’t finalized as yet. And the last one is a film by the producer of Chandni Bar, R Mohan. He has taken a Punjabi director who has done a lot of films in Punjabi and has won many awards too. There are also talks going on for the remake of Satte Pe Satta by Raj Sippy. Raj wants Sanjay Dutt to play Amitabh Bachchan’s role with me playing one of his siblings”.

Meanwhile what happens to his other film He – The Only One. Wasn’t it supposed to be his launch pad? “Yes, it was supposed to be my first film. We did the mahurat and also started shooting. But during the course of the shoot, the Padmalaya film producers had a major rift between them. That’s the reason the film is on halt. Jimmy was my second film but because He – The Only One is on hold Jimmy will release first. I shot nearly 60 percent of the film”.

Mimoh’s lesson in humility!

Mithun's son Mimoh might have taken his first step towards stardom, but the young man has mastered the art of modesty at an early age. And the credit goes to his superstar dad. "He's a very sweet and a well-behaved boy. Just like his dad used to be in his hay days. Whenever Mimoh comes across any elderly person he doesn't greet them by shaking their hands, but by touching their feet. And even if he forgets to do that, his father reprimands him gently," says a unit member. Must say, modesty is the middle name of this Chakraborty family!

Bengali cinema raises issue of land acquisition


After the Nandan lobby intellectuals, it is the turn of commercial Bengali cinema and theatre to raise the issue of land acquisition and industrialisation.

Filmmaker Haranath Chakroborty’s "Tulkalam" starring Mithun Chakraborty and Rachana Banerjee has struck a chord with viewers. The movie is running to packed houses in Minar, Bijoli and Chhabighar which are mostly haunted by Bengali cine-goers looking for something more than the regular commercial fare.

Breaking the myth that urban middle class shun commercial Bengali cinema, many like gynaecologist Sudhir Biswas and bank executive Priti Sinha went and watched the film. Dr Biswas, who took his wife and 19-year-old daughter to watch the film, said, “Although the dialogues were bit trite at times, the pace of the film ensured we were on the edge of our seats.

Moreover, the issue was represented well enough for people to start thinking,” he said. Priti, who went with her boyfriend Ranjan, echoed similar feelings. “While the dialogues were somewhat loud, probably targeted at rural audiences, the movie was good for one watch,” she said.

While similarities between real life people in the contemporary arena of pro and anti acquisition are obvious, Haranath makes his protagonist Toofan, played by Mithun, say, “Industrialisation is needed but not over farmlands or by displacing farmers.”

Even the other characters, including the South Asian industrialist played by Nimu Bhowmik, a social activist enacted by Rachana Banerjee, the opposition leader played by Arun Mukherjee and the South Asia-based Bengali businessman played by a newcomer, have uncanny resemblance with many of those who form the on-ground dramatis personae at Singur and Nandigram.

While Haranath claims that the Mithun factor is behind the rush, he cannot deny that the freshness of the issue has a major role to play behind ‘house full’ signs at all the 47 theatres Tulkalam has been released across the state.

“All three shows in most of the halls are having a full house, particularly at the three city theatres. Although it would take a few more days to realise the returns, viewers have undoubtedly got hooked. Interest about the film had grown even before it was released because its central theme had become known,” Haranath said.

Haranath, however, credits the film’s idea to filmmaker Anjan Chowdhury, who wrote the script but passed away before the film was released. While Tulkalam is one of the most political films to come out of Tollywood stables in recent times, according to Haranath, Chowdhury’s earlier hits Shatru and Pratibaad, also dealt with social issues.

The city’s commercial theatre district, Chitpore, that has always shown a penchant for recent happenings, is also tapping in on the issue. All the theatre companies involved with production seem to be changing their storyline, even though their titles prominently feature Nandigram.

Srishtidhar Pal of Digvijayi Opera, getting ready to present Roktakto Nandigram (Bloody mayhem at nandigram), denied that the play was on the recent incidents at the East Midnapore hamlet. “Since our shows would be commercially released from October, we are yet to work on the finer details of the story. Although not spinning around Nandigram, the story of farmers would have a significant part,’ Pal said.

Subhasish Maiti, general manger of Uttam Opera and producer of Tulkalam Nandigram (Bedlam at Nandigram), said that their play would be a social drama. “It would primarily be a social play for all to see, but elements of the present situation would be there, speaking of farmers and rural society, without disturbing communal harmony or political feelings,” he said.

Another ‘social drama’, Kalkeuter Chhobol (The bite of Snake), also has Nandigram prominently splashed in its promos but on hitting the road later this year it would shy away from issues. “While playwright Utpal Roy is presently working on the story, we do not want it to a political piece. If the story demands, elements of recent incidents would be there, but keeping away from political complications,” said Gopal Patra of Nataraj Opera.

"The film begins with the customary disclaimer.. But Mithunda's latest box-office wonder is about land acquisition in a burning Bengal", goes the review of Bong film Tulkalam in The Telegraph by Chandrima S. Bhattacharya (could not find it on the web edition).

Hindustan Times has a special story by Drimi Chowdhuri titled Bengali cinema raises issue of land acquisition. The Telegraph review can't conclude without a reference to the "Left intellectuals":

"Such direct political reference is not usual in a mainstream Bengali movie. The issue must be so hot that it can't be swept under the carpet any more. Neither by Left intellectuals nor by Mithunda. The carpet will catch fire.."

Funny. The carpets of The Telegraphs and The Indian Expresses and Anand Bazar Patrikas seem to be catching fire. All these "development-mongers" vehemently supported the WB Govt on the land acquisitions and kept quiet about the first round of violent turn of events in Nandigram this January (that led to the March 14 firing).

["Villagers have become extremely wary of journalists, they turn back some of them, and claim that at least the biggest newspaper group, ABP, has sold itself to the state government. The variations are whether the buying party is the state government, the CPI(M), or the chief minister..", wrote Aloke Thakore in The Hoot].

So now, they are all busy taking digs at Left Intellectualism (IE article on "Why left intellectualism is so damaging", refering to some statement by some CPM intellectuals who are not sure where to stand.) Understandably turning a blind eye to most other left intellectuals who stood firm against the WB Govt's development policies even before the March 14 firings at Nandigram. In a desparate attempt to make sure everything goes "right", the way WB Govt and CPM has been moving. So that any voice against them, intellectual or not, are not taken seriously by anyone.

But no matter how muchever they try, the fire is very much here. Unlike what they would like to believe ("Unfortunately, real rural Bengal does not have a Mithun", says Ms Bhattacharya), the people are standing up for their rights and won't give in without a fight. And they are aware who are trying to take them for granted and who are benefitting from it.

E Niwas nears completion of T-Series film NEW!

MUMBAI: T-Series' My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves, directed by E Niwas, will start its final shooting schedule from 23 April 2007 at different locales in Mumbai.
The film stars new find Nikhil Dwivedi, Amrita Rao, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pawan Malhotra, Jawed Sheikh, Lillette Dubey, Saurabh Shukla, Mukesh Tiwari, Daya Shankar Pandey and D Santosh. The film's music has been scored by Pritam and the choreography has been provided by Farah Khan, Ganesh Hegde and Rajeev Surti.
The film is scheduled for release in September 2007.

Boogie Woogie presents Kids Championship

There's good news for kids, this summer kids can look forward to a lot of excitement on Boogie Woogie. Eight weeks of fun and foot-tapping dance and music is what is in store for all Boogie Woogie fans. The Kids Championship is open to kids in the age group of 10- 12, there will be three elimination rounds to be telecast on the April 28, May 05 and May 12 respectively.

Each round will feature seven young participants out of which the three best performers will be selected to move on to the next round. The nine participants thus selected are nine-year-old Akash Das from Orissa, C handan Maheshwari from Faridabad, Papiya Sarkar from West Bengal, Priyanka Mahajan , Kasturika Sarangi, Sayali Samant, Jaya Sharma, Priyanka Keni and Aishwarya Kale, who will feature in the fourth round with a partner of their choice. A sibling, parent or even a teacher is allowed to join in. Two participants will be eliminated in this round which will leave seven kids to go to the next round to be telecast on May 19, 2007.

The fifth round to be telecast on May 26, will be a theme round in which the participants will be given a theme by the choreographers. The star attraction on this episode will be Mithun Chakraborty's son, Mimoh Chakraborty and debutante actress Vivana both of whom make their screen debut with their film Jimmy. The sixth round is an exciting celebrity round in which each participant gets the opportunity to perform alongside a television star. In this round to be telecast on June 2 nd, one young participant will be eliminated leaving five kids to fight for the next round. This round which will be the sixth round is going to one in which the kids perform with the members of their family. Yet another kid will be eliminated on this occasion leaving four talented kids to go in to the finals and fight it out for the crown. D-day will see the four finalists trying to out do each other to win the prize money. The winner takes home Rs 5 lakh.
