Paresh Rawal (b. May 30, 1950) is an Indian actor from Bollywood, Mumbai. He plays several roles ranging from the comedian to the villain. He is of a Gujarati background.

His notable films include Sardar (1992-93) in which he plays the lead role of Vallabhbhai Patel, an Indian freedom fighter and leader. In the 1992 release Maya Memsaab, a film based on Madame Bovary, Rawal plays a shop-owner who entraps the lead character in a series of financial schemes and finally becomes her creditor, demanding an impossible sum of money that leads to her suicide.

In 1996, Rawal played the challenging and ground-breaking role of a eunuch in the critically-acclaimed film Tammanna (Hope, or Desire) who raises a young, orphaned girl, played by Pooja Bhatt. The film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt.

In 1999, Rawal played a dim-witted and boisterous, but kind-hearted Marathi landlord Baburao Ganpatrao Apte in the film Hera Pheri who takes in Raju (Akshay Kumar) and Shyam (Sunil Shetty) in adverse times, and ends up in a get-rich-quick scheme when a kidnapper of the granddaughter of a wealthy businessman accidently calls them to demand ransom. Rawal's acting was a key reason for the major nationwide success the film received. He has co-starred in many films with Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty and a majority of them have been hits.

In 2002, Rawal portrayed one of three blind bank robbers in the hit film Aankhein (Eyes), which included Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Sushmita Sen.

He is also a famous theatre personality. He is married to Swaroop Sampat.

Paresh Rawal has won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award and the Filmfare Best Villain Award. He has also been awarded the prestigious National Award by the President of India for his roles in Sardar and Tammanna.

Paresh Rawal is an alumunus from Narsee Monjee Institute of Commerece and Economics (NMIMS), Vile Parle, Mumbai.

When you meet successful character artistes like Paresh Rawal, you know that Indian cinema has come of age. Paresh Rawal an actor par excellence in this interview talks about his memorable roles and more, his answers precise just like his acting...

1. Which are your forthcoming films?
I am working in two interesting films. One is a Priyadarshan film in which I am playing a lovesick inspector. The other is a film by Vipul Shah in which I play a blind man. Both are very interesting roles.

2. Which was your first film?
My first film was 'Arjun'. I have been in the film industry for 15 years and done all kind of roles villainous, character.

3. From 'Arjun' till today which role was the most interesting?
I think the most interesting roles have been the ones that I have portrayed in 'Dacait' and 'Kabza'. I think that these two were very well written roles..

4. How long have you been doing theatre?
Well for more than 27 years. Actually I started professional theatre in the year 1973. I used to do plays in school but that was because I was a mischievous guy. That's why I guess I was put in plays. Intercollegiate plays were the starting of serious theatre for me..

5. Tell us something about your educational years and did you always want to take up acting as a profession?
As a child I was mischievous and every child wants to attract attention. I guess that's why I liked acting then. With intercollegiate theatre I got into acting seriously. I did my B.Com from N.M College and my principal was very supportive and told me often 'you are good at this, keep doing this and study if you can'.

6. You think acting can be taught?
Acting cannot be taught. It can be learnt. You have to observe others perform and keep learning. I have learnt a great deal observing other actors.

7. Who do you think you have learnt the most from?
I have learnt from almost everybody. From good actors I have learnt what to do and from bad actors I have learnt what not to do.

8. What is your criterion of selecting or not selecting a particular role?
Basically for me the role has to be challenging enough. Something that I have not done before. Challenging so that I can dig in the role and bring out the best, that is my craft.

9. So which has been the most challenging role?
I think the most challenging role was in 'Tamana'. I was playing a eunuch. It was playing the role of a person who is alive.

10. And the most memorable role?
'Sardar Patel' That was the most memorable role. I learnt a lot about our country, history and it was a great character to play.

11. How would you define a good actor?
A good actor is one who can do justice to different kind of roles and not get cornered and stuck up in one kind of role.

Favourite Actor Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Amitabh Bachchan.
Favourite Actress Kajol
Favourite Singer Kishore Kumar
Favourite Clothes Cotton, Jeans and Shirt
Favourite Food Any Light food
Favourite Holiday Destination Anywhere with my family
Favourite T.V programme Movers and Shakers

Paresh Rawal is one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, a director's darling. He is able to live the roles that he performs with his huge talent and immense dedication.
He has been acting since his school days and was a popular fixture on the intercollegiate circuit. Graduating to Gujarati theatre, he made an indelible mark on the audience.
His talent was widely acclaimed and from there it was just one step up into the movies. Javed Akhtar saw him on stage and he was picked up for a role in Arjun, which was instantly appreciated by the audiences. He had a short and snappy role in Naam too.
And then came Vellji Bhai in Sir, a powerful performance which was very popular with cine buffs and even got him a national award as the Best Supporting Actor.
Followed by Ketan Mehta's landmark film Sardar, which according to him too was his most satisfying role- a role which won him international acclaim too.
He played the role of an eunuch, Tikku, in Tamannna and captured the intricacies of the character with incredible deftness.
Paresh Rawal is a part of regional cinema too and has acted in numerous regional films from Telugu to Punjabi.
He is still very much involved with his first love i.e. theatre and has his own production house, Aangikam. His theatre group has performed plays like Maharathi, Mulraj Mansion, Chiranjeev and a Hindi production Khel which has been inspired by the all-time great '70s celluloid thriller, Sleuth.
He is wedded to the immensely talented former Miss India, Swaroop Sampat, who seems to be a positive influence in his life.

Paresh Rawal to make singing debut

Saturday, November 26, 2005

Talented actor Paresh Rawal will soon be making his debut as a playback singer. It is for good friend and fellow actor Naseeruddin Shah's directorial debut Yun Hota To Kya Hota...What If. Composed by Viju Shah, the lyrics have been penned by Sameer. The song will be recorded by December end after a couple of rehearsals. Although it is the first time that Rawal is singing for a film, he has sung before for the 1982 musical, Khelaiya. The situation in the film required Rawal to sing. At first Naseeruddin Shah thought of getting a professional playback singer, but then he thought Rawal fit the bill, perfectly. A little apprehensive in the beginning, Rawal was finally convinced by Shah. The song will be picturised on him. Yun Hota To Kya Hota...What If also stars Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Jimmy Shergill, Ayesha Takia and Boman Irani.

Interestingly choreographer Saroj Khan has also turned an actor with this film.

"I salute Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan" - Paresh Rawal

Courtesy: IndiaFM
Friday, November 11, 2005

From being the most hated man after Naam to moving you to tears in Tamanna to keeping you in splits with Hera Pheri, the effortlessness with which Paresh Rawal moves with each character can make a chameleon blush. Right now, Paresh Rawal is on a 'laugh trip' - his latest being Deewane Huye Paagal and the actor in him is already getting cagey.

Is it true that Deewane Huye Paagal is a sequel to Awara Paagal Deewana?
DHP is not a sequel of APD. These stories must have been spread because the name is quite similar to Awara Pagal Deewana and so is the font of the film on the posters. Moreover the cast of that film, Akshay, Suniel and myself have been repeated in this film. Also the fact that we three are doing a sequel to Hera Pheri must have added to the confusion of us doing a sequel to APD as well. In DHP, I'm one of the four guys (Akshay, Suniel, Shahid and me) chasing the same girl (Rimii Sen); each of us tries different ways and uses different tactics to win her heart.

What do you think is the popularity behind the Akshay-Suniel-Paresh combination?
I would attribute the success of Akshay-Suniel-Paresh to the great tuning and rapport that we share amongst ourselves; it's excellent. There's no insecurity. We respect each other's work and motivate each other to do their best. When we work together, it's like working in a film with a family member.

For an actor who's done all kinds of roles, you're now more often seen in comedies?
That's because all my comedy films have done well. But yes, even I'm beginning to get cagey about doing just comedies. I'm looking out to play some good, meaty characters - it could be serious, it could be negative. Anything but comedy especially since I have done varied roles in the past like - Sardar, Tamanna, Kabzaa, Sir, Naam, Hatya. I am a character actor and I have no regrets about that since it gives me so much scope to do much more than just being a hero.

It's strange to see an actor like you working so well with Akshay and Suniel, who've known to be non-actors in the initial stage of their career. Comment.
No, I wouldn't call them non-actors. I've always been of the firm belief that given a good role, good material and good directors any actor can excel. Look at Akshay and Suniel... they not only prove that, they are amazing. Suniel is going to be the highlight of DHP.

What's it like to work with newcomers like Shahid Kapoor in Deewane Huye Paagal and John Abraham in Garam Masala?
Actors, nowadays, come with a clean slate. You can mould them the way you like. Shahid and John show these inclinations and are willing to learn, which will hold them in good stead for a long time. Because an actor never stops learning as every film is a new experience.

Why do you think we should watch Deewane Huye Paagal?
I don't want to get philosophical or spiritual about DHP, but look at the title; it's catchy and underlines only one thing - that it's a nice breezy comedy. What more reasons can we need to see a good healthy family entertainer?

What are your upcoming releases?
There's Deewane Huye Paagal, Phir Hera Pheri, Maalamaal Weekly - all comedies.

What do you think of the crossover film rush?
Crossover films are a good sign and indicate an amalgamation of forms and culture taking place. I've had a brief but nice experience with Chai Time and there are talks taking place of more such films. These films have affected the mindset, the work culture and discipline of the film industry for the better. About five years back a making of a film was spread over, rather fragmented over to 3-4 years, now it gets completed in six months. Such things do make a difference to the quality of films. In the earlier scenario when shooting moved at a sluggish pace, not only did the quality suffer but also the producer. And when the producer suffers the whole industry suffers. Fortunately things have changed, and a lot of credit also goes to people like Aamir Khan who said 'no, one film at a time' which was later reinforced by Shahrukh Khan. I salute these guys.

What's been your experience with fans abroad?
Oh, extremely overwhelming. They love you so much that you can safely say that they are blind in their adoration of you and your work. They are very much atuned to the growth of an actor from India, and give the right tips and criticism to do better in the future.

Finally, what would be your message to your fans abroad?
Just be Indian; don't ever forget India.
