Sudhir Mishra to direct Soha Ali Khan and Shiny Ahuja

Luckily for Sudhir Mishra. Mirza Ghalib is no more. After appropriating one phrase from Ghalib - Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi – as the title of his last film, Sudhir Mishra has borrowed a bit more of Ghalib for his next venture.

Entitled Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan , Sudhir's next film is again a political parable. In Hazaaron Khwaishein… I went into the Indian politics of 1970s. Now I'm going back even further to the 1950s in Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan to recreate what would be an even tougher scenario. You could say this would be my first truly period film."

"Soha has that quality to achieve a truly outstanding level in her performance," says Sudhir Mishra. "I cast Soha because I couldn't think of any other contemporary actress who could take me back fifty years."

Sudhir regrets the departure of Chirangada from his creative ambit. "She had the capacity to grow into a truly formidable actress. I guess she has personal reasons to bow out."

Shiny Ahuja is, of course , a Mishra favourite. Not only did he play the lead in the director's Hazaaron Khawishein… , but also starred in Mishra's assistant Ruchi Narain's Kal.

"Shiny has become quite a star. No less than Mahesh Bhatt has taken a shine to Shiny," Sudhir Mishra informs with a twinkle in his eye. "I'll just have to share the dates with the Bhatts." Jokes apart , Sudhir Mishra is quite kicked about recreating an era gone-by. "I love the films of the 1950s Hopefully Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan would've a similar impact as Hazaaron….I'm truly surprised by how far the film went. Someone like Saeed Mirza found it to be an intense love story. That really surprises me."

Whether it's King Khan or our 'superhero' Hrithik Roshan, the audience just cannot wait for their Diwali/Eid bonanza. The film has been making headlines ever since it was announced. Only time will decide its fate at the box-office.

The new contemporary look of the film, the stunts, the Matrix effects and the two tracks that have been retained, has generated unbridled enthusiasm and curiosity amongst the audience.

The film hits the screens on 20th October.

Режиссер римейка Дон Фархан Актар в одном из интервью заявил, что изначально, при написании сценария, в роли Дона он видел Ритика. Но по мере написания неожиданно оказалось, что на эту роль больше подойдет Шах.

Responding sharply to the reports that the Abhishek-Aishwarya link-up is part of the strategy to keep Umrao Jaan in the news, the film's director J.P. Dutta chortles dryly. "When have I ever bothered with marketing my films ? Do you know when my first film Ghulami was released there was just one hoarding in all of Mumbai? I don't think publicity itself helps a film. It went on to be the biggest hit of my career so far. It's all destiny."

Among the unusual locations for Umrao Jaan the movie moghul chose a spot 40 miles away from Lucknow in a place called Mehmoodabad. "I needed a special palace to shoot these crucial scenes between my bachcha (Abhishek) and Ash. I think we've canned scenes that have given me great satisfaction. I don't even know how Umrao Jaan is making itself out. It's gone out of hands. There's some invisible force guiding me. You know, when I started shooting I had neither Abhishek's nor Ash's complete dates. Ash wondered how I'd do it. But look at how the schedules work themselves out. What is it, if not destiny?"

Stopping to ponder JP says, "Abhishek keeps telling me I need to get market savvy with this film. But I wouldn't know where to start. All I've done is made the film exactly the way I wanted. If I wanted I could've livened up LOC with fictional embellishments. But I had to be true to the story of the soldiers. I couldn't lie to their memory. Neither can I fool around with Umrao Jaan's story."

Смотрела вчера свой любимый танец Джаи Прады из Sharabi - и захотелось посмотреть с ней еще что-нибудь, уж больно хороша... Смотрено с ней уже упоминавшийся Sharaabi, Sargam, Фотография в свадебном альбоме - и больше вроде ничего. Что присоветуете, знатоки? Желательно - с песнями-плясками, но если без них - то все равно, что-нибудь такое... хорошее. :-)

Bharadwaj serves none other than director of the Godfather

Here is the scoop of the month. So we talk about Indian’s going international in the film world. Well, now the tables have turned and how much they have turned.

Francis Ford Coppola, director the probably the best gangster film of all time The Godfather needed some outsourcing to be done for his latest film Youth without Youth. Apparently some scenes had to be shot in India but Coppola could not make it here and so he asked none other than Vishal ‘Omkara’ Bharadwaj to shoot certain scenes for him. Bharadwaj along with his team as well as Coppola’s second unit shot the film in Mumbai from September 6 to 8.

Bharadway was very happy with this development and when Coppola had asked him how much remuneration he would charge, Bharadwaj politely declined and said it was an honour to serve you.

Некоторые из сцен нужно снять в Индии, но Коппола не может поехать туда, поэтому попросил Вишала Бхарадваджа, снявшего Омкару и Макбул, сделать это за него. Таким образом, Бхарадвадж снимал с 6 по 8 сентября в Мумбаи сцены как вторая съемочная группа Копполы. Он был, ясно дело очень счастлив и платы за работу с Копполы не взял, сказав, что для него это большая честь - услужить ему.

Прочла тут, что Онир, режиссер, снявший My Brother Nikhil, решил снять адаптацию Гамлета. Продюсеры будут те же, что у Being Cyrus, сценарист - тот же, что писал вместе с Бхансали Black. А на роль Гамлета прочат Ритика...
Фся в сомнениях. Гамлет, конечно - роль-мечта для многих актеров, но вот осилит ли Ритик (при всем моем к нему уважении) такую роль... И вообще - началась мода... Снимали б уж хоть какой-нибудь "Двенадцатую ночь", чтоль...

Вчера узрела передачку - Шнур вокруг света называется. (это который Сергей Шнуров,группа Ленинград).
Так вот был он в Индии.Ну,в свойственной ему манере,правда без мата выразил свое отношение к Индии вообще и к индийскому кино в частности Побывал на Фильм-сити,сказав,что вот именно здесь и есть самая святая земля в Индии ,сказал,что наверняка тут снимался Танцор диско,который он любит! Потом показали неизвестный молодняк,видимо сериал снимали,грит,а вот актриска ничего,помылась,наверное,перед съемками.... Нашел там кучку русских девчонок,которые работают в кино на подтанцовке,они такие счастливые-довольные,говорят платят тут хорошо
Ну,дальше было не очень интересно,он в Гоа поехал,а там уже и не Индия,практически...

А мне с Джаей "Родной ребенок" (Aulad) нравится. Трогательный фильм Правда, это фильм больше Шришкин, она там на первых ролях, но у Джаи тоже много сцен. И играла она от души. Я, канешна, не знаток, но советую. Для Джаи в этом фильме хеппи енд за все ее страдания

помню смотрели в советском еще варианте - в кино - рядом со мной мужик просто слезами заливался... сморкался громко всю вторую половину фильма и еще прикол помню - тоже в кино. когда Джая промокла и они прибежали в дом и Джиту дал ей Шришкино сари и она вышла и показывают то ее, то Шри - помню тетка сзади говорит - как похожи, одно лицо

The 'Awed' couple: Vidya - John in Salaam-e-Ishq

"It does feel like a very different kind of pairing, doesn't it?" says Vidya Balan about her latest co-star. Of late Vidya Balan is feeling very glamorous. "For a song in Lage Raho Munnabhai in Goa with Sanjay Dutt I had to go through sixteen costume changes in the course of the song. Isn't that cool?" Vidya sounds as excited as Mumtaz who changed into dozens of costumes for a film called Roop Tera Mastana.

After sizzlers like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra , John goes for a complete about-turn in Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq. Vidya seems very happy with John. "No two actors could be more different in personality . John is very cosmopolitan and I'm very Indian in look and attitude. I think that friction in our personalities is essential to our on-screen compatibility. That's how our director Nikhil Advani saw us…We're two completely antithetical souls from the outside. I'm the simple homely girl, while he's the cool dude. But scratch the surface, and we're a perfectly compatible couple. Isn't that how it is in real life too?"

Director Nikhil Advani wants Vidya's maturity in matters of the heart to show on screen. "That's the quality I want to bring out in their on-screen chemistry. The Vidya-John pairing is so fresh…like East meeting West. The two are so different in all aspects …their body language, their approach to a scene…everything is so different. I'm really excited about how their pair looks on screen," says Advani whose film already has a chalk-and-cheese pair Govinda and the South African actress Shanon.

Vidya had thirty whole days to get acquainted with the finer points of John's personality "He's so hassle-free and so much fun to work with. I may look like this demure Indian girl. But I like my share of fun. I think John and I are going to make a great on-screen couple."

Никхил Адвани, директор Salaam-e-Ishq, тож в восторге - ну прямо Запад встречается с Востоком. В фильме будет еще одна необычная парочка - Говинда и южноиндийская актриса Шэнон.
Еще Видья в восторге от того, что для песни из Lage Raho Munnabhai в Гоа с Санджаем Даттом у нее было целых 16 перемен костюмов. Типа круто и все такое. Ей не удалось, конечно, переплюнуть Мумтаз, которая сменила несколько дюжин в фильме Roop Tera Mastana.

Bipasha refused to work with Emraan

Not many know Bipasha was offered to play the role of what Kangana Ranaut is playing in Woh Lamhe. But she refused to do the role because Emraan was cast opposite her. Not that Bipasha has a problem with Emraan’s kissing image but it was just that she thought she would look taller and bigger in front of Emraan Hashmi. Interestingly Bipasha played Emraan Hashmi’s sister in his debut film Footpath.

Later even Emraan walked out of the movie because he felt that he does not have a very strong role in the film. Mohit Suri, who is Emraan Hashmi’s cousin wanted him in all his movies but could not do so in this one.

Woh Lamhe now stars Kangana Ranaut and Shiney Ahuja in place of Bipasha Basu and Emraan Hashmi. Woh Lamhe is slated to release on 29th September, 2006.

Во, блин... оказывается, изначальным кастингом на Woh Lamhe были Имран и Бипаша. Бипс отказалась, потому как посчитала, что рядом с Имраном будет выглядеть слишком высокой и крупной, а позже из фильма вышел и Имран, который счел, что у него не слишком сильная роль. Так что нам досталась парочка Шайни+Кангана, чем лично я несказанно рада!!!!! Вы только представьте Бипашу+Имрана...

По поводу Woh Lamhe - у меня вопрос - помню изначально он подавался как история Махеша и Парвин. В последние дни, когда фильм начали усиленно рекламировать никто уже не упоминает их вообще, и вся рекламная линия будто бы изменилась. Сценарий был переписан? Я что-то пропустила? Кстати, релиз фильма задержали вроде, да? Он должен был ведь выйти 15-го...

Да вроде не, не переписан, по-прежнему это история, навеянная историей Парвин и Махеша - по крайней мере, режиссер и актеры в интервью все время про это твердят. А релиз - не знаю, на когда был изначально, сейчас обещаются 29-го сентября.

Umrao Jaan’s costumes to be auctioned to help a charity organization

Director J. P. Dutta’s film Umrao Jaan is in buzz as the producer-director of the movie has decided to auction the costumes of main character Umrao Jaan to help a charity organization. While name of that organization will be announced at the music launch of the film, which is to be held on September 28.

Another interesting fact about the movie is that most of its technicians and assistant directors on the sets were women. Umrao Jaan is a women centric film and talks about young Amiran who's kidnapped and sold to a brothel at the young age of nine.

Sholay shouldn't be remade!

Ram Gopal Varma certainly won’t appreciate this. But according to Farhan Akhtar, Sholay is a film that cannot be remade. Says Farhan, “Sholay has already been done to perfection. Don didn’t happen overnight. It’s an idea I was sitting on for a long time.

As much as I love the other classics from my growing years, like Sholay and Deewar, Don was extra-special. It’s not as if I found Don to be a film that needed any kind of improvement. It’s just that I felt it was something that could render itself well to a contemporary adaptation.”

Hrithik not Don

Farhan thinks Sholay doesn’t need a new adaptation. “To this day, it looks as fresh as it did earlier. Full credit to Mr Ramesh Sippy, the writers (Salim-Javed) and the cast for making it a complete and timeless classic. But Don lends itself to a new interpretation. When you see how it’s turned out, you’ll know why I did a new take.”

A report that Don was first offered to Hrithik Roshan, has Farhan flustered. Immersed in post-production work and hurtling towards a Diwali deadline, Farhan says, “That was really weird. The facts have been strangely distorted. I had a wonderful experience working with Hrithik in Lakshya. I was hopeful that we’d do my next movie together. Then I started writing Don. And the protagonist just became Shah Rukh Khan and no one else.”

Visual treat
Since Don has loads of special effects, Shah Rukh’s hi-jinks are bound to be compared to Hrithik’s high jumps in Krissh. Farhan disagrees.

“There’s an inherent difference between the FX in the two films. Krissh, being about a superhero, allows a lot of in-your-face visual effects. This film doesn’t allow us that. The hero in Don is grounded to reality.

At times, the effects are so subtle that people may not even notice it.” Surprisingly, Don isn’t Farhan’s most expensive film yet. “Don has been expensive for my producer, Ritesh Sidhwani, but not as expensive as Lakshya. We shot Don for four months in Malaysia with a crew of a hundred people. That couldn’t be cheap. But still, Don is less expensive than Lakshya, which was shot extensively in Ladakh.”

Paying homage

Talking about the special effects, Farhan says, “Red Chillies is the young, enthusiastic company that did the film’s special effects. And they were all Don fans. In fact, we’re all a group of Don and Amitabh Bachchan fans paying homage to the earlier film.”

Extremely content with the way the film has shaped up, Farhan says, “My producer and I are very happy with what we’ve done with Don. And my music company, T-Series, is extremely upbeat about the sales of the music too.”

Хитрющий Фархан Актар утверждает, что не надо было бы Месть и закон переделывать... типа он и так смотрится достаточно современно, и без того идеален. А вот Дон - его надо... нипоняла до конца его логику, почему - мне Дон и в старом виде понравился, также, как и Месть, смотрится вполне-вполне и сейчас...

Director Mahesh Bhatt is known for his frank and straightforward views. He is the one who doesn't believe in hiding anything, even if it happens to be related to his personal life. His is an open book for his fans and viewers. As already reported earlier in our columns, the great director is now making 'Woh Lamhe', on his personal relationship with Bollywood actress late Parveen Babi. In an article written and circulated by him, he says:

I was watching the last scene of 'WOH LAMHE' in my editing room when it dawned on me. I know why human beings have always tried to keep their dead alive: We try to keep them alive in order to keep them with us.

When my mother died, I had to descend into her grave to turn her face towards the sacred Kaba. So overwhelmed was I at the thought of leaving her in that cold grave that I was seized by this overpowering longing to stay there with her 'forever'. It was there, in that moment of finality, that I learned that if we are to live ourselves, there comes a point at which we must let go of the dead, let them go, keep them dead. Let their bodies disintegrate into dust and fuel the never-ending flow of life. Let them become a picture by our bedside. Let them become a melody which people can hum, and let their lives and their dreams flicker on movie screens and fill the living with some hope. 'Woh Lamhe' is my last goodbye to the memories of Parveen Babi, a woman whom I loved and lost.

"The streets of Mumbai for me are littered with memories of half-lived yesterdays. Nostalgia is pain. The day Parveen died, I realized that in spite of my claims that I had made to myself, her memory had not withered within me with the passage of time. Praveen's breakdown is an old story. But I wonder if anyone can imagine what it is like to live with a person who is going mad.

"The morning I left Parveen's house before it all began, comes back to haunt me. She was off to her shoot for Prakash Mehra, and I was off to fill up my long empty days with talk of cinema with my struggling out-of-work contemporaries in Mehboob Studios. In retrospect, I remember that there was a strange feeling of dread in the air. She kissed me good-bye making sure that the kiss would not spoil her makeup. Little did I know that that was the last time I would see her as the Parveen that I knew.

"How can I ever forget that heartbreaking image of her, when I walked in to the house that evening, and found Parveen, in make up and a filmy song costume, cowering in a corner of the room, with a knife in her hand, shivering with fear? She looked like an animal, one that I had never seen before. 'Close the door Mahesh,' she whispered. 'They are coming to kill us. Close the door quickly!'

"And with those words, ended my days of love and splendor, sin and passion with Parveen! I was looking into the eyes of madness and the face of death. Because, the person that I knew had died, and with that our relationship as we had known it, died too. Parveen started to break up into little pieces in front of my eyes, and I was helpless in the face of the fury of her madness. And all the kings' horses and all the kings' men could not put her together again.

Parveen's illness was genetic. The chances of her recovery were slim to none. The doctors who treated her knew this but were not decorous enough to tell us this bitter truth, because if they did they would be out of business. It was in those terrible times that I discovered for myself that it is we who push the so called 'mentally disturbed' to commit suicide. That is the reason why I have no hesitation in saying that the psychiatrist is one of the worst enemies of our culture. Because it is he who is forcing all those people who have thrown in the towel to fit into this brutal value system.

"Parveen's madness, the threat from the mighties of the film industry to put her before the camera at any cost, the psychiatrists throwing up their hands, and her 'ignorant' mother yielding to the pressure for electric shock treatment, climaxing with me running away with her to the jungles of Kodai where we spent the 'best' moments of our life is 'fictionalized' brilliantly by Mohit Suri and Shagufta Rafique in the second half of 'Woh Lamhe'. Our attempt in this film is not just to make you grieve or uplift the viewer, but to leave an indelible memory of the essence and truth of an exceptional woman who lived in another time and place.

'"Why are you using the tragedy of Parveen Babi and marketing it for profit?' asked a self righteous priest to me recently. I answered with a smile, 'I must say I'm staggered by your unblinking arrogance. Don't you see the absurdity of you of all people asking me this question? You and those before you have only made the suffering of a man called Jesus into a multi billion-dollar industry today! And will continue to do so... I am at least marketing the memories of a friend, which are mine and mine alone. Are you going to claim copyright over those memories too now? In that case you should be crossing swords with every media person. After all, the marketing of tragedy is something the media does every day!' The priest froze, not having expected this kind of outburst.

"The power of grief deranges the human mind. Writing and making movies is my way of dealing with my life burns. 'Woh Lamhe' has erupted from the deepest part of my being. And that part of me was triggered suddenly one day by Parveen's death and the subsequent discovery of a tape, which my daughter Pooja found in my first wife's house and brought over to me. The tape contained a letter that Parveen had recorded and sent me, in which she talked about her approaching illness, her overpowering loneliness and her need to get out of the entertainment business. The silences between her words spoke to me more eloquently than her words did. I remember these silences as being a defining part of our relationship. The only regret I have is that I couldn't see her illness coming. Looking back, I realize now that there were so many signs that I just failed to read.

"On a silent moonlit night long before Parveen's actual breakdown, I woke up in her house to the sounds of someone whining. I discovered that the side of the bed on which she slept was empty. Her zebra - striped bed quilt without which she never slept was gone. When I rushed out of the bedroom I found Parveen seated under a lamp made out of shells, weeping inconsolably. Worried, I inched closer to her to find out what had triggered this sudden upsurge of emotions. I remember that she recoiled from me and covered herself with her quilt. At dawn, when darkness began to recede from her drawing room and the air started to resonate with the chants of 'Hare Rama, Hare Krishna' from the adjoining ISKON centre, in a heartbeat, her mood changed. Suddenly, she went into the bathroom and having bathed, dressed in immaculate white kurta pyjama. Rolling a small mat onto the red carpet, she did something I had never seen her do in my three and a half years' association with her. She began her 'namaaz.' The sight was mesmerizing. Her silhouette against the glow of the morning sky, her trembling lips reciting the Arabic prayers, her tears of grief metamorphosing into fervent tears of devotion, still play on the screen of my memory. Then, having concluded her prayer, she began to lay the table and light the candles, even as a beam of sunlight fell upon her, after which she went into the kitchen and immersed herself in the domestic activity of preparing breakfast for herself and me. Parveen loved the domestic chores from which ordinary women seek respite.

"As the day deepened, our silence was punctuated by the occasional flicker of a smile which would play on her lips, and just as suddenly, tears would start to brim in her eyes. I did not know what had happened to her in the night that made her do what she did, or what was going on in her mind now. As she sat down staring at her palm, and puffing on a cigarette, she finally spoke to me. 'If you shut this window and save me from this deafening roar of the ocean, I'll tell you what happened to me last night' she said. And then she opened the doors to a traumatic incident in her life, which she had kept shut from the world for a very long time.

"She spoke about the riots in Ahmedabad. If my memory doesn't fail me, I think it was the carnage of 1969 that she was referring to, where 4000 people are rumored to have died, most of them Muslims. Tales of Muslim girls being raped and killed were flying thick and fast around the city, and the nuns in her school, fearing for Parveen's life and safety, hid her under a pile of thick mattresses, in a truck, and smuggled her out of the campus to a safe zone. 'You do not know,' she said in a matter of fact tone that itself sent a shiver down my spine,' what it is to lie curled up under a pile of mattresses, knowing and fearing that any moment, the mob could stop the vehicle that I was in, and pull me out and rape me and tear me to shreds. ' What still stays with me is the manner in which she said what she said. My wife today wonders whether it was this trauma, which scarred her, psyche and contributed to her breakdown. Frankly, if you ask me, I don't know.

"When I first started to write and make movies, I felt that everything could be explained. Now that I have grown older, I can see how untrue it would be, if I claim that I have been able to tell you the story of my life with Parveen Babi. Not knowing is not resignation. It is an opening to amazement.

Life does not end. But films do, and with them the lives and thoughts and dreams we have shared for so short and magical a time . We leave the characters of a movie at the zenith of their lives or in the hours of their deaths, and there they remain frozen in time "In a village somewhere in Africa, when a storyteller comes to end of his tale, he places the palm of his hand on the ground and says, "I put down my story here." Then he adds, "So that someone else may take it up another day."

Censor problems with Woh Lamhe?

Woh Lamhe which is slated to release on the 29th of September is under Censor scrutiny. According to sources, there are some objectionable scenes in the movie which need to be edited and hence the problem.

“Right now I cannot say much but yes we are facing Censor problems. We need to send a few documents to the Censor Board to sort this out”, said producer Vishesh Bhatt.

Well, we hope all goes well for the film.
