At 53, Rekha is still Bollywood's style diva



Rekha, who can be arguably termed India's Greta Garbo, continues to be Bollywood's ever-graceful style diva and still sets many a heart aflutter even as she turns 53 Wednesday.

"She is a true style diva when it comes depicting the Indian look. She looks fabulous in the traditional Indian saris. I would say that she brings out the best of Indian outfits. She carries them very well. But I wouldn't like to see her in a western outfit," Shantanu of designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil told IANS.

The actress, who is synonymous with style and beauty for her fans, surprised many when she bagged the MTV Lycra Maha Style Icon Award in 2004. In 2006, British magazine Eastern Eye listed her as one of "Asia's Sexiest Women" in their September issue.

A rare blend of beauty and talent, Rekha also hogs the limelight for her timeless beauty and mysterious lifestyle. She is quite secretive about her personal life, lives alone with her secretary Farzana and doesn't socialise much except to attend award functions.

She manages the media's prying eye tactfully and always keeps her cool.

"I'm a very shy person. Unlike what has been insinuated, it's not a strategy to retain my aura. I'm not trying to live up to any mystery woman image.

"People might think that I am not married and have no children, the conventional lifestyle you know, but I see it this way - as long as you are alive, you have a chance to have a future. At least there is hope," she was quoted as saying.

As an actress she evolved with each role she played. Be it a courtesan in Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan or a housewife in Ijazzat or a fun-loving girl in Khubsoorat, she has always proved her mettle.

After watching Umrao Jaan, nobody could believe that she could barely speak Hindi when she came to Bollywood as her enunciation of Urdu in the period film was flawless. She won the National Award for it.

"As a performer, she is inspiring. It's not only Umrao Jaan but her entire career and characters that she essayed through her performances that are extremely inspiring," Aishwarya Rai said in an interview.

Rekha gave memorable performances in Ghar, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Khubsoorat, Silsila, Vijeta, Utsav, Khoon Bhari Maang, Zubeida, Bhoot and Krrish.

But she disappointed her fans and critics in Mira Nair's controversial Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love in 1996 and as a wife who turns to prostitution in Aastha: In the Prison of Spring the following year. Many felt it was the end of her career.

But Rekha remained unperturbed by the criticism.

She said: "After Aastha: In the Prison of Spring people had a lot to say about my role of a wife who moonlights as a prostitute. I don't have problems playing anything. I've reached a stage where I could do justice to any role that came my way. It could the role of a mother, a sister-in-law, negative, positive, sensational or anything."

Born Bhanurekha Ganesan to well-known Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha's personal life has been quite tumultuous. She was born out of wedlock and was disowned by her father. Her mother later forced her to work in films.

She made her first appearance as a child actor in 1966 in a Telugu film Rangula Ratnam. Three years later she made her debut as heroine in hit Kannada film "Goadalli CID 999" with Rajkumar.

In 1970 she forayed into Hindi films with Sawan Bhadon, paired opposite Navin Nishchol. The movie was a huge hit and Rekha became a star overnight.

Despite being overweight, she got many offers and gave hits like Kahani Kismat Ki and Raampur Ka Lakshman and there was no looking back.

In her heyday she scorched headlines for her link ups with co-actors like Jeetendra, Vinod Mehra, Kiran Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.

Rekha continues to work and some of her recent releases include Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana, Bachke Rehna Re Baba, Yatra and Krrish.

Bollywood`s inimitable diva Rekha has spoken candidly about Amitabh Bachchan, saying he taught her the nuances of acting. She praised his performance in "Last Lear" as "very Shakespearean".

He`s my guru. I learnt so much from him," Rekha said. Commenting on Amitabh`s role in "Last Lear", she said, "seriously I think Rituparno Ghosh is like Utpal Dutt. And I believe Bachchan is very Shakespearean in `Last Lear`. Together I believe the two have paid a very proper tribute to Shakespeare. I`m looking forward to it.

"I seriously think Bachchan is more Bengali than any one I know. He`s a true Bengali dada. And I`m not saying that because he has a Bengali wife or has spent time in Kolkata. There`s more of Rabindranath Tagore`s legacy in him than anyone else."

Is she aware that Preity Zinta in Rituparno Ghosh`s "Last Lear" has been styled, a la Rekha in "Silsila"? "Has she? Is it an imitation or a tribute? We`ve to make that distinction very clearly," said Rekha, who turned 53 Oct 10.

Asked about her birthday celebrations, she said: "I didn`t notice. For me every day is a celebration, every moment a blessing from god. I don`t need to visit temples on my birthday. There`s a temple right here in my house and that`s where prayed, as I do every day."

How does she manage to remain so positive in spite of so much negativity around her? "I don`t think about negative things. There`s so much beauty, love and excitement to be savoured every day. People can get to us only if we allow them to. Besides, I don`t believe people are negative without reason. Even the cobra that bites you has a reason to do so.

"At Dev Saab`s book release, I had to rush in and rush out because my pup Shiva was waiting in the car. I`ve five pups and all very dear to me. They`re my children. I left Shiva in the car. Yes, I did trip but I went right into the car! So it was a perfect trip.

"People ask me about the way I conduct my life. Sorry, beautiful music is conducted... Lives cannot be conducted. At least I`ve always gone with the flow, risen and fallen with the rhythms of existence without, tripping over seriously.

"My current high is bonding with Shah Rukh Khan. Of course, I`ve known him for years. But lately we`re connecting more profoundly. I`ve done a blink-and-miss appearance in `Om Shanti Om` and that`s when I got to know him seriously. He has a sharp mind."

Rekha then spoke about Tagore. "Do you know Tagore was a true woman`s libber? He started (the university in) Santiniketan for women long before feminism was conceptualised. I like the thought of women being given philosophical and emotional sanctuary by a man who isn`t threatened by them.

"Today, I find we`re too obsessed by superficialities and surface gratification. On the news channels all we hear about achievers is their financial assets, homes, villas and parties. There has to be a spirit that supports dreams. I dream all the time. My life is a dream and I dream a new dream every day."

Is Rekha going to the West? "No, where did you hear that? I`ve no such plans. I`ve never planned anything in life, certainly not my career. Mira Nair`s `Kamasutra` happened to me by chance. Maybe something will come up. At the moment I`m excited about the debut of my nephew which will happen next year."

Rekha is now preparing for her role in Hema Malini`s film, to be directed by Revathy. Esha Deol will be seen with her in the film.

"Hemaji has the most radiant and goddess-like face I`ve seen. When Lataji called me a reincarnation of goddess Laxmi, I was over the moon. But really, she was just being so kind. I don`t really want to be a goddess, or a diva or whatever I`m called. I just want to fulfil my responsibilities. If you ask me to assess myself, I`m an okay actress and a good human being. But I`m not content. I still have a dream. Don`t ask me what it is. I don`t know."

: Меня не станет в тот день, когда я буду довольна тем, что я делаю.

Для новой комедии "Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana" (где у актрисы одна из главных ролей) Рекха только что исполнила один из самых трудных газелей легендарного певца Мохаммеда Рафи, Din dhal jaye из фильма "Guide".
Однако, Рекха не считает, что она хорошая певица.

"-Я знаю, что многие актрисы поют очень хорошо. Табу превосходно поёт. А вы слышали как поёт Мадхури Дикшит? У неё изумительный
голос" , - сообщила Рекха корреспонденту агенства IANS.

Я сказал ей, что она напоминает мне Гиту Датт и Рекха воскликнула:

"-Забавно, что Вы говорите это! Моя сестра говорит, что я могла быть сестрой Гиты Датт. Но я никогда не училась вокалу. Спасибо, вы очень добры, - ответила Рекха на мой комплимент её пению. - Но, Бог мой, у меня ужасный голос. Я не певица. Я не пою слова. Я чувствую их. А в газеле Шайлендры-сааба Din dhal jaye столько самых разных эмоций, что любому чувствительному человеку легко утонуть в них. Я пою также как живу - я ЧУВСТВУЮ. Чувства длятся вечность.. "

Почему вы выбрали именно этот газель Сачин Дев Бармана?

"-Я не выбирала. Однажды на съёмках режиссёр Амар Бхутала услышал, как я напевала газель Бармана. Он сказал: "Мэм, спойте пожалуйста это для нашего фильма." Я возразила, сказав, что газель не подходит фильму по смыслу.
Но он настоял и сказал, что создаст сценку, куда можно будет вставить песню.
Я попросила режиссёра не сохранять оригинальную оркестровку, мы сохранили совсем немного от оригинальной аранжировки. Это сделало исполнение газели более трудным для меня, поскольку все недостатки моего голоса проявляются без оркестрового сопровожденияТеперь, когда я слышу свой голос, мне хочется утопиться. Я только что послала рабочую запись режиссёру.
Я была уверена в одном: я не хотела петь как пел Рафи-сааб. Никто не может петь так как он, кроме сестры Латы, она превосходно исполнила этот газал в альбоме «Shraddhanjali». "-Это сказала Сими Гаревал, когда я спела на её передаче "Рандеву". Она не могла поверить, что я смогу взять высокие ноты в песне Латы-джи Yeh kahan aa gaye hum (из фильма "Silsila"). Сими-джи сказала, что она бы не смогла так. Ну, что ж, я не думала, смогу я или нет. Я просто сделала это."

Довольна ли она своим пением?

"-Если наступит день, когда я буду довольна всем, что я делаю,
меня не станет. Я никогда не буду довольна. Но я благодарна. Я благодарна за каждый удар, каждый болезненный провал. Я оставила всё это позади. В жизни не должно быть никаких вопросительных знаков, только восклицательные. Я так же сильна или слаба как любой другой человек. Я не научилась искусству владеть каждой ситуацией. Я только пытаюсь найти дорогу."

До конца года у Рекхи планируется два релиза:

"-Фильм режиссёра Goutam Ghose "Yatra" и комедия "Kudiyon Ka Zamana". Это два совершенно разных фильма. Мне нравится играть необычные роли, как роль старой женщины в фильме «Krissh». Я не видела фильм.( ) Я никуда не езжу. Но я счастлива, что он имел огромный успех."

Как ей удается оставаться такой оптимисткой когда вокруг столько негатива?

« Я не думаю о негативных вещах. В мире столько красоты, любви, волнующих моментов. Люди к нам потянутся, если мы сами это позволим. К тому же я не верю, если люди хотят причинить тебе зло без причины. Даже кобра не укусит пока ее не потревожишь.»

Издавая книгу « At Dev Saab», я просто не находила себе места, потому что мой щенок Шива сидел и ждал меня в машине. У меня 5 щенков и каждый из них для меня дорог. Они-мои дети!»

« Люди меня спрашивают как я управляю своей жизнью. Извините, это красивой музыкой можно дережировать, а жизнью –нет. Так или иначе, я всегда плыла по течению, падала и поднималась и даже совершала серьезные ошибки»

« Сейчас я более тесно дружу с Шах Рукх Ханом. Хотя я его знаю долгое время, но в последнее время мы держим более прочную связь. Я мельком засветилась в «Om Shanti Om», и все это потому что я его узнала более серьезно. Он-очень остроумный мужчина»

« Сегодня я обнаружила, что мы чересчур одержимы легкомысленными и поверхностными вещами. Все новостные каналы трубят о богатеях и их финансовых достижениях, виллах, вечеринках. На самом деле должен быть стимул к мечте. Вся моя жизнь-мечта. И каждый день у меня новая мечта»

Собирается ли Рекха на Запад?

« Нет! Где вы такое услышали? У меня таких планов. Я никогда не планирую свою жизнь и свою карьеру.С той же « Камасутрой» Миры Найр получилось совершенно случайно. Может еще что нибудь такое ожидает меня в ближайшем будущем. На данный момент я волнуюсь за дебют моего племянника(-цы?) в следующем году.»

Сейчас Рекха готовится к роли в фильме Хемы Малини. Также задействована в этом проекте Эша Деол.

« У Хемы-джи-настоящее лицо богини, которое я когда либо видела. Когда Лата-джи меня назвала реинкарнацией богини Лакшми я была просто на седьмом небе от счастья. На самом деле она была просто добра ко мне. А вообще я бы не хотела быть богиней или дивой как меня называют. Я просто хочу реалиизовать свои возможности. Если вы хотите, чтобы я оценила себя : да, я- хорошая актриса и хороший человек. Но этим меня не удовлетворишь. У меня до сих пор есть мечта. И не спрашивайте меня о ней, я ее еще не знаю»

Raj Kanwar plans to bring Rekha, Shabana together

Outwardly there's no love lost between the two. Many years ago, Shabana Azmi had been openly critical of Rekha's dialogues and performances.

But now, 30 years after they played friends fighting over Jeetendra in Raaste Pyar Ke, they may work together in Raj Kanwar's Sadiyaan.

Reluctant to reveal too many details at the moment, Kanwar told IANS: "The film would be an entirely new territory for me. Yes, I do want to cast Rekha and Shabanaji together. Work is on for the screenplay. Song recordings have also started. I hope to get the project in place in a few weeks."

More recently Shabana's husband Javed Akhtar had opined that he didn't think too highly of Rekha either.

"I've never been a fan of Rekha. Her performances failed to touch me. The first time I really liked her was in Krrish," he said.

However, Rekha is deeply excited by the film.

She said: "Shabana, whom I call Munni, is always a pleasure to work with. When you have a co-star like her you're challenged to give your best. Sadiyaan would be interesting also because I've never worked with Raj Kanwar before. Also, he's planning to cast a very big male actor in a guest appearance."

Спустя много лет пара Риши Капур-Рекха появится в одном кадре! В фильме Раджа Канвара «Sadiyaan», по словам Риши, хорошая концепция сюжета и ему приятно снова работать с неувядающей красавицей. «Должно получиться интересно» - подытожил он.

India's Greta Garbo breaks silence

She is the most fascinating woman in Bollywood. The aura around her is intriguing. For the first time, Rekha, India's Greta Garbo, breaks her silence on her private life. Featuring on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal on Star World to be aired this Sunday, Rekha speaks about her relationship with her parents, her marriage, stardom and the influence of superstar Amitabh Bachchan in her life.

In an exclusive sneak peek into the interview, Simi Garewal tells Timesofindia.com what it was like talking to Rekha about facts which she has never spoken before.








"It was a 20-year-long wait. Rekha had given her first TV interview 20 years ago on my programme, It's a Woman's World . She doesn't talk about her private life, but I persisted and she agreed. We started off a bit tense but she opened up. I feel this is one of her most candid conversations on personal topics," sighs Simi.

In the interview, Simi rekindles the original Bhanurekha in her, to which Rekha says, "I am and I will always be Bhanurekha."

Rekha reveals a difficult childhood where she grew up without her father (Gemini Ganeshan) around, the “three ammas”, her complexes about her looks as a child, how she was ' kali ' (dark) and her sister ' gori ' (fair).



Rekha recounts how she dropped out of school at the age of 13 to "forcibly" join films and financially support her family.

"Bhanurekha never wanted to be an actress. She had different dreams and desires. At that point, all I wanted was to be married and to be loved and to spend my life with somebody who cared for me and have lots and lots of children," says Rekha. "I wonder why I felt like that then, but that's what Bhanurekha wanted. That was her dream," she adds.

Rekha admits that she didn't "know what a father meant" and "grew up without a male influence in my life". She also tells Simi that she had 'three mothers”, and her own mother was so "dizzy and drunk with love for my father that she never mentioned the pain she went through".





So did Simi get the answers she was looking for? "One never gets the answers one wants but Rekha was very forthcoming and honest within the framework of her life."

The episodes also feature Rekha giving her take on womanhood. "When does one register that one is a woman? Does she become a woman when she becomes responsible? Does she become a woman when she falls in love? Does a girl become a woman when she goes through pain, when it is difficult for her?"



She reminisces how the high of being a superstar hit her really late. "Not until Khoon Bhari Maang . I didn't realise the value of being an actor. But when I went up on the stage, and received my award ... Boom, it hit me."





Asked if she is a recluse, Rekha says, "No. Who said I was alone? I didn't plan it this way. It just happened to me. I didn't plan to go and live in that house alone. It so happened, ittefaaq se ."

The diva denies her marriage to filmstar Vinod Mehra. "He was just a well-wisher and very close to me." And on marriage to Mukesh Agarwal, she confesses, "In a way it was an arranged match - it wasn't love, that's for sure. Before anything registered, it was all over. But then sometimes that one small thing can have a profound effect in your life ... That did."



Agarwal’s suicide had a major impact on her, Rekha says. "That was the time I really really grew up. I became the woman of the world. I got a crash course of what people are all about."



On her relationships, Rekha has been candid. "It was never a spur-of-the-moment fun. It was always genuine, from my side at least. I didn't get into a relationship in search of anything in particular. I didn't have an idea what to look for," she says.



"I didn't know what a man is all about. What he is supposed to mean to a woman? Is he a provider? Is he supposed to be a lover? Yes, I knew that part. I know that by heart. I knew that my man had to be a lover. He had to love me to death. Because I didn't know any better."





And on the million-dollar question on Amitabh Bachchan? Rekha confesses that he was the man who actually influenced her life for a long time, about whom she has spoken at length to Simi. She still seems to hold on to him “somewhere in her life”.



"This is Rekha – with all her charm, her depth, complexes, wit and fantasies. This is closest you can get to her. You'll learn a lot about Rekha, but the mystique about her still remains. This interview is going to spark a lot of speculation about this woman. But at the end of it, my long wait was worth every word she said," Simi says.

Isn't this extremely narcissistic?
It starts that way. Maybe beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, in oneself. So what? I don't care if it's said she's on some sort of spiritual trip, she's obscure, vague, not normalЎ-she wants to be different. I am not so differentЎ-people don't want to be common or normal. They have put me on a high pedestalЎ-or think I am alienЎ-orЎ-

You've known various generations of stars. Has anyone else thought this way? Tell me of three such persons.
Why just three? I know so many who have achieved a lot in many fields. Why make comparisons? Why talk only of actors? Take my bai, she had eight kids before she was 30. She's expected to be different by her family, strongerЎ-the same way my life and experiences have taught me to be different.

Ever compare yourself with Meena Kumari?

Like me! Basic, simple, real, extremely comforting, unique, warm and aesthetically attractive. Yet it's common, very normal. It just has a bed, I am a big girl, quite tall, and I need a big bed.

No.

No somewhere between king-and queen-sized.

What kind of a bed is it?
(Straight-faced) Upholstered.

Which is the best bed that you've ever slept in?

How many mirrors in your house?
Are you making me out to be a Fedora? I am not good at numbers. There couldn't be more than one in every room.

Do you remember that much-discussed magazine photograph of yours kissing a mirror?
That was an innocent moment suggested by Gautam (Rajadhyaksha). That wasn't me. That degree of self-possession could drive anyone crazy.

You've seen so much in the last four decades. Aren't you quite shyaani?
I wish I wereЎ- (pause). No I take that back. I am not shyaani. After going through so much in life, I still trust people.

What do you mean by 'going through so mush in life'...except maybe the marriage to Mukesh Agarwal that didn't work out?
What do you know? Only what is published. One goes through a private hell every day. Just because one chooses not to announce the gory details. Today, it's all about give and take, take and giveЎ-what's-in-it-for-me...networking. Throats can be cut backs can be stabbed. I don't want to sound pessimisticЎ-but all this is more intense than ever beforeЎ- (Trails off). Mostly, we create our own hells.

Hell? When did you go through that?
There was a pointЎ- when I was really in hell, in a cesspool, a dark pitЎ- or so it seemed at that time.

In the public mind, there has always been an association with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Wouldn't you like this to end?
(Unfazed) Why? I hope not. Mr. Bachchan is one of the best things to have happened in my life. The best teacher, the best guruЎ-

How come the best guru, when you haven't interacted with him in years?
Well, I've chosen to learn as much from his off-cameraЎ-as from his on-camera demeanors.

How come you wore sindoor in your maang at a wedding reception recently, immediately setting off a big buzz.
Ogawd!!! I was going there straight from a film shootingЎ- and I don't worry about people's reactions. By the way, I think it looks rather nice on meЎ-sindoor suits me.

Cool. In 2008, how is Ma'am Rekha perceived?
I've never been into yeh film usko mil rahi hai, her colleagues are doing so much now. I am not about why she's doing what on TV? Or why's she doing that endorsement? That has never mattered to me. My needs are basic but profound. Foremost, I am a woman, an actor next. I could have been a littlie puppyЎ-who knows? I'm blessed that I have received so much adulation, unconditional respect, so many prayers. I couldn't have asked for more.

You feel you've done it all?
Never. Like Dilip (Kumar) saab said on receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, it feels as if it had all happened to someone else. Take my fun side; it was only brought out by Hrishida (Mukherjee) in Khubsurat. There's so much more about me to explore and express.

Who are your three best friends?
Farzana, Surinder MakanЎ-she's in DelhiЎ-and a certain friend who's obscure, a godly figure.

OhhhhhЎ- Mr Bachchan?
(Unfazed) He's not God. Human beings cannot be given the stature of God.

I sleepwalk through everything I do I am doing Sadiyaan with Hemaji (Malini), I'm playing Rishi Kapoor's wifeЎ- the film introduces Shatruji's son Luv.

Weren't you supposed to be in a film by Hema Malini?
Yes, it's to be directed by Revathy with Esha and me. I am ready to do the film whenever they are ready.

There have been efforts to make you the Oprah Winfrey of Indian television, right?
Ogawd!!! I am not delusional. I am nowhere close to her. In any case, in my country I'd be expected to be a million OprahsЎ- and some more.

Would you be able to do a Kaun Banega Crorepati kind of show?
No... Though I've been offered many shows on the same lines.

Why have you avoided endorsements?
I've to still find an alternative medium through which I could give, what my fans expect me to. This is the era of tucks and nipsЎ-not my route. I don't believe in shortcuts.

What about your much-anticipated biography?
No biography can reach the real picture. See Dilip saabЎ-he's an allah ka banda. He's never contrived anything. He has never done ads. He has been himself. That's what I'd like to be.

What about a Rekha concert?
I've done concerts twice in my lifeЎ-in '87 and '97. Maybe this is the year to start planning a concertЎ-it has to be done right. I don't want to be running all over the place like a headless chicken.

Okay, tell meЎ-why haven't you ever tried to adopt a child?
Because it is the hardest job ever. I know what it is to be deprived of a father's love. I would want a child to have both parents. That's why I've never thought of adoptionЎ-or of having a child out of wedlock.

I believe you're promoting your nephew from San Francisco, Naveed, as a prospective hero.
Who me? He wants to be an actor.

Does he have what it takes?
I am bound to be biased about himЎ- how can I say anything more? Personally, I'd say a gentle soul.

Lots, all of themЎ-all 14 of them. Even my grandmas have had the potential to be super-duper actors.

Я ещё осенью читала где-то, что Рекха якобы должна была сниматься в Аладдине, но что-то там не сложилось (естественно) Так что, думаю, что эта статейка скорее (ш)утка в честь 23 февраля Как-то не верю я в чудеса...
А с другой стороны - всё в жизни бывает может и будут они там вместе, только в отдельных сценах

ARE REKHA, AMITABH ACTING TOGETHER AGAIN?


Пока режиссёр фильма (Sujoy Ghosh ) никак не комментирует все эти слухи - то ли боится сглазить, то ли это просто очередные мечты поклонников Рекхи и Амитабха. Но и опровержения пока не было...
А фильм уже давно начали снимать, песни записали (Амитабх опять сам будет петь ) - но Рекха в кастинге не была заявлена - снимаются с Амитом - Санджай Датт, Ритеш Дешмукх, а кто из женской части - не знаю точно... Джухи вроде и Самира Редди.
Вобщем - я так думаю, что вся эта шумиха насчёт Рекхи - это пиар-ход такой ..

Кстати - в фильме обещают какие-то крутые спецэффекты вот может в них и будет Рекха типа - "это ему кажется"

New Delhi: Veteran actors Rekha and Kamal Haasan will grace the opening and closing ceremonies respectively of the forthcoming International Film Festival of India (IFFI), starting Nov 22 in Panaji.

“Rekha and Kamal Haasan will be the chief guest of the opening and closing ceremonies, respectively, at IFFI 2008, besides the presence of the governor of Goa, S.S Siddhu, Chief Minister Digamber Kamath and the minister of state for Information and Broadcasting Anand Sharma,” said S.M. Khan, additional director general and director of film festivals.
