The otherwise reserved Amitabh Bachchan had a metamorphosis of sorts on the sets of Rituparno Ghosh's The Last Lear. Bachchan, who plays a theatre artiste and swears by Shakespeare (in the film), often provided comic relief to the cast and crew while filming in Kolkata and Mussoorie. His first target was family friend and director Rituparno Ghosh. After taking endless digs at him for his I-want-perfect-shots streak and his then-shaven head, Bachchan rechristened him 'Hitler Ghosh'.

The story goes that Bachchan almost threatened to wage a war against Ghosh for his disciplinarian ways. He even jokingly mentioned spearheading a movement and establishing a union that will address grievances of actors and technicians. Says producer Arindam Chaudhuri, "Mr Bachchan was in a great mood throughout. I have never seen him having so much fun. He would take digs at Rituparno but all in good humour. He had threatened to set up a union to monitor Rituparno's dictatorship on the sets."

Preity Zinta was also at the receiving end. Her part demanded her to drape herself in cotton saris and Big B would always advise her to mind her step. He asked crew members to be alongside Zinta fearing that she might trip and fall. "Preity was extremely comfortable in saris but Mr Bachchan told everyone that she is yet to get accustomed to it."

After giving his shot, Bachchan used to grab the microphone and call out for Rituparno and Preity who would be close by. Adds Chaudhuri, "Can you imagine Mr Bachchan screaming in that heavy baritone voice? He would do it just to shock everyone."

There's a much talked-about proposed family concert next year. Who will be accompanying you, Abhishek and Aishwarya?
Things are still being finalized. But it looks like Akshay Kumar, Bipasha, Lara, Riteish and Shiamak Davar.

Finally the National award for Black after a year's delay. Delayed triumph tastes sweeter?
The delay was due to certain legal unforeseen circumstances. But eventually the National Award Committee came through and the awards have been announced.

I am deeply grateful to the Government and the Awards jury for considering me, but more importantly for having considered the film Black and for having given it a separate recognition as well. …. I cannot say about delayed triumph being sweeter. Any triumph is sweet and humbling and honourable. I am grateful and happy.

You sound really pleased.
I'm happy for the film, happy for Sanjay and sad that Rani did not get an award for her performance. She played the main protagonist.

All the other performances were guided by her in the film. Our recognition came because of her and her incredible performance. She was responsible for our achievement. When she called to express her joy about my National award, her temperament was just the same and as intense as when we saw the first copy of the film together.

But we must respect the decision of the Jury and acknowledge the person that did get the actress award namely Sarika.

Did the controversies surrounding the award (including a jury member claiming they were being pressurized to give you the award!!!!) cause you embarrassment/discomfort?
No it did not. They are the jury and they sit on judgement and they must have their reasons for their claims and decisions. I think what became awkward was that the deliberations of the jury became public because of the court procedure.

The body of distinguished people chosen by State authorities to represent a Committee, are very able and accomplished individuals, working within their own creative and artistic capabilities, guided of course by a set rules and regulations. They know their job. We are no one to question them.

If differences had arisen within them, as is wont in most bodies who pass judgement, it would have been prudent perhaps if it had remained within the closed doors of the Committee. Who are we to remark on it? It is for them and the State to deal with.

Most of us feel Black is your finest ever. Where would you rate it at this point of time when you've been doing such varied work?
Black rates very highly in my repertoire. I cannot say if it is the finest. I hope the finest is yet to come. As an artist I would cherish that. It's always a challenge perhaps to better what has been done before.

Black has arguably been your most lauded film to date. Do you feel feel it has gone as far as it deserves. Isn't it strange it has been given a National award for best Hindi film when in fact much of the dialogue is in English?
I am not conversant with the selection procedure of the National Awards so I shall not be able to comment on this. They must have their reasons for doing so.

Lately you've been shooting with your poora parivar barring Jaya in Hyderabad. How's the experience?
Its been wonderful !!

This is the first time you've shot with Abhishek and Aishwarya after their marriage. Is it hard switching from a real life Pa to a complete professional at the flick of the camera?
Not really. As actors we go through these exercises with others as well, close friends and colleagues whom you have to be thoroughly professional with.

What changes do you notice in Abhishek after marriage?
Nothing much really. Except the usage of the phrase " Meet my wife" by him, on social occasions !

How's Sarkar 2 shaping up? As intense as the first time ?
I think it's shaping well and yes it is as intense as the first one.

Sholay has undergone a complete change. . . new title and a new name for your character. Would you say it's still Sholay in spirit?
Its RGV's take on the film. In that respect I believe there is a deep inspiration.

нас кинули - танцев не было - Амитабх сидел за столом читал стихи своего отца, выступала какая-то бабулька с трибуны, потом вызвали все семейство на сцену, вручили бабульке приз, Джаи вроде не было. не-а. когда мы под дверью ждали, несколько раз выходили и предупреждали - автографов ни-ни. они вообще практически не останавливались - там была прямая дорожка в лимо. когда они сели, приоткрыли окно чуть чуть, на пару сантиметров, ручками помахали, и укатили.

А читал Амитабх знатно. с выражением, сидя за столом, с книжкой в руках, ну точно сказки на ночь Особенно усыпляло то, что нифигась непонятно правда он временами куски пытался переводить на английский, но разве стихи переведешь? Эх.. надо учить хинди... НАДО.

Plenty of drama unfolded on Wednesday afternoon at the famous Jalsa residence of the Bachchans. Ankur Singh, claiming to be a Bachchan fan, came there and demanded money from Big B to buy a car. When he was (obviously!) denied his wish, he attempted to take his own life by guzzling down phenyl.

A source confirms, “I was passing by Big B’s bungalow when I noticed a young man creating a scene at the gate. He was demanding money to buy a car from Big B and after some time drank something from a bottle and tried committing suicide. He was taken away by the police in an unconscious state.”

Ankur Singh, a 27-year-old man, travelled all the way from Kolkata to meet his idol Amitabh Bachchan. On August 25, he landed up at Big B’s bungalow and started arguing with the watchman. He said he was a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and wanted to meet him. The watchman ignored his plea, thinking he was just another fan, but Ankur didn’t budge. The helpless watchman took the message across to Big B and he was asked to get the fan in, as informed by the Senior Inspector, Pradeep Shinde of Juhu Police Station.

Big B met Ankur Singh that morning and interacted with him. Bachchan asked the man to return to his hometown and before he was sent off, told his watchman to hand over Rs. 5000 in cash to Ankur as he had travelled from far-off Kolkata. Ankur happily accepted the money and left Jalsa only to return soon after.

Says Inspector Shinde, “On August 29, around 2 pm, Ankur returned to Jalsa claiming that he wanted to meet Mr Bachchan. The guards refused to let him in as Mr. Bachchan was not at home. He began to create a scene saying, ‘Agar iss janam mein Bachchan saab ka dost na ban paya toh agle janam mein hi sahi’ (If I can’t be Bachchansaab’s friend in this lifetime, I’ll try in the next) and drank half a bottle of phenyl outside his gate. He wanted a car as a gift from Mr. Bachchan which he was rightly refused.”

Big B spoke to the cops immediately after the incident. When contacted Amitabh Bachchan, confirmed the news, saying, “I believe this incident took place at Jalsa but I was not in the house yesterday. The police in Juhu have taken charge of the case.”

Abhishek who was to shoot at the ND Studios in Karjat reached late and was heard telling his associates, “There is a lot of tension back home. Some guy has tried committing suicide after drinking phenyl. I have been receiving calls from home and am worried.”

Ankur Singh was immediately admitted to the Cooper Hospital by the Juhu Police. “We have charged him with the attempt to committing suicide. His condition is improving at Cooper Hospital and the moment his he gets better, we’ll arrest him,” declares Pradeep Shinde.

You have quite a motley crew with you in Aag.
Oh yes. There was a very wide canvas. There're several smaller characters who have been very nicely portrayed. I specially love Mohanlal. I love his craft. He's an exceptional artiste. With such simplicity he's able to display emotions that are so complex. Unfortunately, I didn't have much to do with Sushmita or not too many scenes with Ajay Devgan either.

You've had the singular honour of being in both the versions of Sholay.
Why just me? Sachin is also in both the versions. He plays my brother. There're these little-little things that have been incorporated into the original. Sholay was the first film that Ramu saw. So he has a nostalgic attachment to that film. But Ramu has developed his own vision based on his attachment to Sholay. To bring the whole theme and characters into the city is a very bold and brave thing to do.

All the actors were in awe of you.
So you say. I haven't seen it.

Maybe they are such good actors they hide their awe.
Then I need to be in awe of them for being such good actors.

Why haven't you and Ramesh Sippy worked together lately?
He hasn't asked me. He hasn't been directing films.

Do you miss working with those directors?
Of course! I'm damn fortunate to work with Ramesh Sippy. Just like I had the singular honour of working with Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and now the new generation of filmmakers. Ramu's craft is totally different from Ramesh Sippy's. How can you forget your past? I don't. I love my past. Don't you?
Not all of it. Well you gotta take the good with the bad.

Ramu keeps threatening us with several projects featuring you and Abhishek
Yeah, he wants to do Time Machine with me and Abhishek. It's a nice concept and beautiful story. I'm comfortable working with Ramu. So why not another film? I haven't done a sci-fi before. Sarkar 2 was a fantastic experience. I do hope it lives up to the expectations raised by the earlier film, though the canvas is much larger this time.

Sarkar Raj is your first sequel.
Oh yeah! The inter-relations haven't changed, though some new characters have been introduced. But the house, the ambience, the wife, sons and daughters-in-law and the working relations are all the same.

You’re a month away from your 65th birthday. How do you look back on the year?
Well, I think every year has its positives and negatives.

It started with my son announcing his decision to get married.Then I got the Legion d’Honour from the French government. Then the marriage, and Aishwarya as the bahu in the house…. such wonderful things happening.

We won’t discuss the bad things.
Why not? They’re the flip side of the good and therefore essential. I don’t look at the lows as bad things. They’re a part of life. Yes, there has been political victimisation, court cases and so on.

The farmland controversy just goes on.
I’ve already announced my decision to relinquish the land, so I don’t know what they’re fighting for. Why do people go to court? When they’re in a dispute, right?

But when I’m saying, ‘Take the land’ where’s the dispute? When you’re a high-profile person, they like to hit out at you as much as they can.

What is it like to have a bahu in the house?
It’s fantastic! I feel I’ve got back my daughter.

Has Aishwarya taken Shweta’s place in your life?
No one can take Shweta’s place in my life. She’s my daughter. But yes, my bahu is like another daughter in the house. It’s wonderful to have her around. We’re extremely happy and I hope she’s happy too.

Did it feel different working with Ash in Sarkar Raj?
Not at all. We were all playing roles when the camera was switched on. Once it was off we were a family again.

Let’s talk about RGV’s Aag. Babban in Sholay is a very cartoonish villain…
Well, let me assure you that this villain is more ruthless in look, and he isn’t humorous at all. He’s a full-on villain.

Any fear of audiences recoiling from your villainous aspirations?
I looked upon it as a challenge. As an actor, I’ve the liberty to try as many characterisations as possible.

Earlier, the accusation against me was why I was only doing leading men’s roles. Now, when I’m doing something different, I’m being questioned for playing a villain.

Do you think you are liberated of a specific image?
Certainly. Because of my age I’m able to do character roles. But as an actor it’s very important for me to do something different.

Anthony Hopkins, who’s one of my favourite actors, and who normally plays sympathetic roles, plays a sadistic killer in Hannibal.

But we admire his craft. So the audience needs to be more tolerant of my need to experiment. At 65, these are the kind of roles I’m getting. If people want to see me doing such unexpected roles, I’m fine. Otherwise I’m out of a job.

Was there a sense of nostalgia in re-visiting Sholay?
No. That was Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay. This is Ram Gopal Varma’s film. I just did what he asked me to. Ramu’s craft is totally different from Ramesh Sippy’s.

Did the thought of playing Gabbar daunt you?
I don’t know why so much is being made out this. That someone decided to remake it is a great compliment to the original.

When Vishal Bhardwaj makes Maqbool or Omkara, he’s praised for how well he has adapted Shakespeare. Then why not Ramu, for re-interpreting Sholay?

Why did Amitabh Bachchan leave the premiere of "Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag" midway? The superstar has refuted the rumour that he is unhappy with the "Sholay" remake and clarified that he went back to be with his ailing mother.

Reacting to a report in a section of the press, Bachchan said: "Kya Karen (What can I do)? People will talk. I can't live my life in accordance with wagging tongues.

"Yes, I did leave the 'Aag' premiere early. But not because I didn't like the film. My mother's health has taken a turn for the worse. And I'm trying to spend as much time with her as possible," Bachchan told over the phone.

"Since I had already seen 'Aag' I left the premiere early. Even now as I talk to you I am at the hospital with my mother."

The entire family is spending as much time as possible with Teji Bachchan. The Big B is dividing his time between shooting at Yashraj Films and rushing to the hospital.

The Bachchans' ardent devotion for lord Ganesh is no secret. The family visits the Siddhivinayak temple at Prabhadevi to pay their respects often. Now, it is learnt that Amitabh Bachchan plans to gift a silver mouse to the temple.

Uday Pratap Singh, a former trustee at the Siddhivinayak temple, confirms the news and says, “Yes, Bachchan sahib has plans of gifting the temple with a 3.5 kg silver mouse. He has organised a custommade silver statue from a jeweller in Amravati. He reportedly said, 'Main murti banakar dena chahta hoon'.”

This is Amitabh Bachchan's first gift to the temple, apart from the regular cash that he always puts in the daan peti. So has he wished for something this time too?

Uday Pratap Singh says, “Now he has a very special reason. Unhone jald se jald dadaji banneki ichcha vyakt ki hai (He has expressed the desire to become a dadaji soon).” Are Abhi-Ash listening?

Adds, Singh, “In the past, many of his mannats have been fulfilled. He had prayed for Abhishek's wedding. When Amitabh Bachchan was unwell, Abhishek and Jaya Bachchan had come to pray for his good health. He had also come here with Amar Singh when he had land problems in Uttar Pradesh.”

Says another source from the temple, “The Bachchan family regularly visits the Siddhivinayak temple. As a ritual, they always whisper their wishes into the ears of the two huge silver mouse statues which are placed inside the temple's entrance. Maybe a wish has been fulfilled and so the family has decided to gift this mouse to the temple.”

“Apparently, the Bachchans have got a third party to organise the murti from a jeweller in Khamgao, Amravati. The estimated weight of the murti is said to be around 3.5 kgs and it will look like the two other mouse statues that are already present in the temple,” adds the source

Deepak Sawant gave the biggest hit of the Bhojpuri cinema last year, Ganga. He is now ready with its sequel, Gangotri in both Bhojpuri and the Hindi version. Earlier, there were reports that Sawant suddenly decided to dub the film in Hindi after looking at the final edit but the fact is that he actually shot the film in both Bhojpuri and Hindi from the very beginning with the same star cast and is planning to release both the versions on the same date.

Sawant’s first film Ganga was a big hit in Bhojpuri. Looking at the success of the film Sawant decided to make the sequel Gangotri which takes the story of Ganga forward. “Gangotri starts where Ganga ends. The entire star cast is the same; it stars Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Manoj Tiwari, Bhumika Chawla, Aruna Irani and Kunal Singh. I started shooting both film at the same time.”

An interesting fact about this sequel is that, Gangotri will have glimpses of Ganga before the start of the movie. “Recaps have been shown only in tele-serial but you will see a recap for the first time in a film. We will show a five minutes recap of Ganga before Gangotri starts so that those who haven’t seen Ganga will get a glimpse of the movie.”

Being confident about his film, Sawant informs that Gangotri has shaped well. “I expect the film to do well just like my first film. This will surely click with the audiences. We have completed the shooting as well as the post production work of the film.”

Sawant’s debut film received three awards and was highly appreciated by the Bhojpuri audiences. “I want all kinds of audiences to see my film not just Bhojpuri. I want my Gangotri to reach out to wide audiences so I am going to release both these films at the same time.”

When asked about his future projects, Sawant replies, “I am working on a script. If Gangotri works, I would make one more film in both languages. But everything depends on this film.”

Sawant plans to release Gangotri this October.

"I felt comfortable doing Cheeni Kum, I felt uncomfortable doing Nishabd," said Amitabh Bachchan in a freewheeling confessional interview with Editor-in-Chief of Times Now Arnab Goswami in his weekly show Frankly Speaking. For once Big B gave a comprehensive answer to the repeated barbs of Naseeruddin Shah who has said at many an occasion of Mr Bachchan's minimal contribution to experimental or parallel cinema. "The kind of experimental cinema that Naseer talks of was perhaps a little limited as far as its box office content was concerned, therefore you tended to shy away from it," he said. In one of the most comprehensive interviews with the doyen of Indian cinema, IndiaFM brings you the first part of this absorbing conversation that you can watch on Times Now this Sunday (9th September). Arnab: So much is happening actually, when one looks back since we last met, the last eight months since we last met on the sets of this show, new films, a lot of events in your personal life, Abhi-Ash wedding…
Amitabh: that's right.

Arnab: And professionally you are doing newer things. How do you look back? What's been for you the happiest moment, if there's not a….
Amitabh: Well… if you are gonna push me to the wall then I'll say obviously the wedding of the son…but you know this is life, everyday there is something happening and … and when you are in a, in a, profession which is high profile….then something or the other keeps happening this is life..

Arnab: are you working harder today than you worked earlier?
Amitabh: I… don't know..

Arnab: Like pushing yourself?
Amitabh: I don't know, I …have never considered using any yardstick to measure whether I'm working harder or less, but let's say that I'm occupied with whatever I'm doing, my day is full and I like it that way, it's something to look forward to every morning. I don't know anything else so I'm happy that I have a few films. And I enjoy going to the studio and attempting new things or whatever is offered to me, it's nice…

Arnab: You know, it was said…This comment had been once made by Naseeruddin Shah & he'd said that why has experimental movies, why have they not happened? And he had been quoted as saying that the one person who'd ruled the film industry-Amitabh Bachchan-in the 70'-80's even after that…didn't make an attempt to do it. But now the kind of movies you're doing are both experiments and they are unconventional. Are you doing it consciously Mr. Bachchan?
Amitabh: Firstly I'm happy, you know… that somebody is noticing that there is a change in our format and in our attempt to do something different, but yes, Naseer is right that in the early years there was this accusation that was leveled not just to me but to all the actors in the mainstream commercial, escapist cinema who had a following, who had a certain profile with the audience and they were often said look, you know you have the strength of the audience and the box-office to be able to make better cinema and therefore why aren't you attempting it? There were several factors I think that go into this…I think when you initially start off work as an artist the main desire is to get some work, to get the work, you want to succeed to get some more work and you realise that what succeeds is what does well at the box office. The kind of experimental cinema that Naseer talks of was perhaps a little limited as far as its box office content was concerned, therefore you tended to shy away from it, but yes after having achieved a certain degree of recognition this should have been encouraged again but I think, by that time there are several other factors that are working let us say a artist like…a prominent star whose stayed number one for several in the box office he agrees to do something experimental in nature, Will the people who are connected with him and in its business treat it in the same tense or with the same attitude that the actors going to that is really the question? I think not because, a lot of commerce writes ahead of and behind this object of 'Great Box Office success' and sometimes it can be very misleading to one. And sometimes it can be very misleading to work. I could be the number one seller at the box office but when I make an experimental film I could be making several considerations for the execution of that project. not necessarily not in the mind s of people who are exploiting it or selling it and that is the danger we feel .cause we never know what the distributor is paying for it and how is he recovering that money and how is he is further selling it and what the exhibitors are paying it and what are the expectations just because there is a cerebral star in it. He may think that this is another movie with lots of song and drama, the usual box office drama content in it, but may end up not finding none of it is there and therefore loose. but he may decide or configure his commercials of that project through that thinking that sort of pre-rights a commercial actor and therefore sometimes there are unfortunate happenings there can be huge losses just because he has bought a part of it thinking this is going to be a commercial film but in fact it is something middle of the road or even less..

Arnab: But when you are pushing the boundaries because you're recent films the themes themselves Mr. Bachchan, Nishabd and Cheeni Kum they are so unconventional, doesn't the fear of – that I will not be accepted by the masses or by the audiences not in Mumbai or in Delhi but in Gorakhpur in this role, doesn't that worry you?
Amitabh: See….when you are playing the leading man then you carry the onus of the birth not the success or failure of that film as well. That's the time to worry and perhaps that's the period of my career where this could have been legitimately argued. But I think that now that I'm 65 and I play character roles and the onus of the box-office doesn't entirely restrict me then I think it makes it much more easier to take these decisions. Also the fact because I'm 65 I obviously can't do something young therefore there are really no options and if there are enterprising people in Cheeni Kum, Nishabd or the villain in AAG, Ram Gopal Verma's Aag or several others that are being considered then its very fortunate for me as an actor cause I'm being tested and I'm being examined all over again and the enthusiasm levels to do something or attempt something becomes different all the more potent.

Arnab: Can you pick for our viewers the two most, as you say the actor has to be tested from these two films Nishabd and Cheeni Kum, two moments where you felt you were being tested?
Amitabh: Yeah…I think both of them in their own way were great challenges, I felt Nishabd was more challenging, I felt comfortable doing Cheeni Kum, I felt uncomfortable doing Nishabd, not uncomfortable morally or ethically or according to social standards. Not because of moral or social angle behind the film. It was a tougher role it was pushing me into areas where I had not been before and therefore trying to think more and wonder and that's what being in a film is all about. if I can have a sleepless night before going on to the sets next morning and I have got butterflies in my stomach next morning then it is worth going to work next morning then it is the test of the examination that going to follow. For an artist I believe that's very important, you need to keep evolving you need to keep going into areas which you haven't been before otherwise it becomes very routine and that would be a very sad state of affairs

Arnab: Even more important than box-office success?
Amitabh: I think somewhere you need to have mental balance. You need the box-office success to continuously be at work but if you are going to be doing work which is routine then as an artist you are going to be dishonest and may be cheating your profession. Ideally of course I would like to be working in really creative films, testing my creativity everyday and seeing that the box office is also sent across outside the pavilion…hitting the numbers are concerned, but that does not always happen, I think you take some of the good with the bad and some of the bad with the good.

Arnab: If you look at it Mr. Bachchan you have always been criticized. Is it because of your stature? Is it because of the things that you do?
Amitabh: I actually should be asking this question. It is usually the media that asks. Two things come to my mind when you put a question like that… one is… is there some kind of dissatisfaction you have towards me as a human being as an individual as an artist as a person… a misfit… whatever… the frills that come with being a celebrity or is it that you need to say this because it is going to make good copy because I think this is where the differentiation will come in and you will have to decide it you want the copy or you will be able to say the truth which is which could well be… that ya … we live in a society where there are just very few limited number of people who are celebrities worthy of being talked about and written about and therefore lets keep writing or attacking them because that's making good copy for us.

Arnab: Well I remember a quote of yours that you gave in an interview in 1999 where you said 'I am never a confident about my career at any stage' and you went on to say that 'everyday I think it is the end of the world and my career is over'. Why would Amitabh Bachchan say something like that?
Amitabh: That's because you have attached a certain renowned to the name Amitabh Bachchan. It's just another name, and it's just another individual, and just another human being who is in the profession and in a medium which is perhaps a little larger than life. All the things that we do are bigger than life and larger in perspective and more heroic and a lot more worthy of adulation and therefore some of that or a very large quantity of that comes on to us.

Arnab: Do you think that Amitabh Bachchan who it is said was rejected by the All India Radio. Does you mind go back to that Amitabh Bachchan? Can you just tell us a little bit more from where you started from because everyone knows, everyone knows your story of coming to Mumbai…
Amitabh: Somebody like

Arnab: What pushes you?
Amitabh: What somebody like you reminds me of the incident then I will think of it. I don't think about it everyday. I think it will be ridiculous to think about it. I think what happened in the past should be treated like that and move on. It would be terrible I think to dwell in what's happened in the past because it's not gonna get you anywhere. It's happened, it's happened you move on. Beet gayee so baat gayee… famous line of my father's verse. But what pushes you is my work. And the fact that I get to play somebody different every morning. I hopefully try to convince other people of that capability of mine and come home hopefully spent the energy that I may have spent putting across this character. Hopefully to have created something new and different. Hopefully to have people some of more discerning people to be able to appreciate that and live again for tomorrow.

Arnab: Did AAG present you this opportunity?
Amitabh: AAG is… Aag is…

Arnab: Did it give you butterflies in your stomach?
Amitabh: Yes everyday and it still does… in the throes of its release. It is a negative role entirely negative role these are some of the fears and dangers that we have if people identify you a great noble, dignified, heroic human being who has done all kinds of nice things in all his movies and now suddenly playing a terrible villain I look upon it as a test. The audience sometimes looks upon it as- How could he do it?

Another new director, Rituparno Ghosh. I believe the last stint in Mussourie was loads of fun. Do share.
Ritu is new to me as a director but not to the film world. He is a sensitive accomplished and acclaimed director. Intelligent and forthright. The entire making of 'Lear' was exciting and fun- filled.

Which really is such a clichéd remark. Everyone says the same for all their films. Mussoorie was a five- day schedule, completed in just two dates. It is a rarity, but when it happens, it can only be fun.

You even wrote the Hindi dialogues for a scene. Have you lately become more participative?
I would like to believe that I have always been participative in all my films. I wrote the scene because Ritu's Hindi is somewhat rusty. And it wasn't as though I did something historic. All I was asked to do was to translate from English to Hindi. Anyone can do that.

People compared your character in Cheeni Kum with Nishabd because they saw you paired with a younger woman in both.
The only similarity is the age difference between the two main characters. Nishabd was a serious introspective look at an odd situation and its repercussions,. Cheeni.. was situationally light- hearted and hopefully funny, with tongue firmly in cheek.

I think the director Balki deliberately kept himself, the screenplay and the performances, away from the norm, even though situations may have warranted it. It was just another love story, except the boy is 64, the girl is 32 and her father 58 !!

Audiences specially women absolutely rejected the generation-challenged relationship in Nishabd. Was the vehemence of the rejection a shock to you? Do you feel audiences aren't ready for radical shifts in the depiction of romantic relaitonships?
Audiences are always right. If they rejected something we must respect that. No the vehemence of the rejection was not a shock, because there were a whole lot of very welcome and congratulatory reactions. I stored them on my phone. They serve me whenever I need an adrenaline rush.

I don't know if audiences are ready or not for such films. From the box office results perhaps not, but for me as an artist it gave me tremendous creative satisfaction, on a par with what I experienced in Black.

How different is the experience of working with a younger actress opposite you like Rani in Black, Jiah in Nishabd and Tabu...
No difference at all. Should there be any ?? We all play our parts as directed. We all mingle and enjoy the experience of working together. We share our creativity and look forward to enjoying its results.

Tabu, I feel, is one of our outstanding actors.
I couldn't agree with you more. She is simply exemplary. She works from within. Nothing that comes out from her as a performance is without conviction. She brings the emotions from the bottom of her heart.

A keen observer can actually see the emotion building up within, welling up in the eyes, before it pours out from her face and mouth. Simply extraordinary!

How were your screen dynamics with her?
My screen dynamics with her are an embarrassment to me. Because you simply continue to admire her wide- mouthed, often forgetting that you are in the frame as well. In fact her personal demeanour is no different either. It's such a delight to be in her company.

The 65th birthday would rank as the Big B's quietest yet. His son was shooting in Namibia for Goldie Behl's Drona and his daughter-in-law was wrapping up the Pink Panther in Boston while wife Jaya was down with a bout of flu. Added to these problems was the constant worry of having a severely ill mother on his hands.

Says a close friend of Mr Bachchan, "He wrapped up his shooting by evening on the eve of his birthday and headed straight for the hospital to be with his mom. That's where he brought in his birthday. Being with his mother gave him an inner strength and tranquility that only a devoted son knows about. And sons, let me tell, don't come any more devoted than this one."

Mr Bachchan himself, bogged down by family, media and legal pressures politely refused to do interviews this birthday. "What's there to say? A birthday is like any other day for me. Yes, friends, fans and supporters make it a very special day for me. I accept their good wishes with tremendous humility and gratitude."

Пишут, что свой день варенья Амит-джи решил провести очень тихо - сын на съемках в Намибии, невестка на съемках в Бостоне, жена приболела - простыла, чтоль... Поэтому накануне дня рождения Амит закончил съемки и поехал в больницу к матери. В этом году он даже отказался давать интервью по этому поводу, сказал, что это для него обычный день, хотя друзья, поклонники делают его особенным, и он с благодарностью принимает все их добрые пожелания.

Я, я люблю!!! И осень, и зиму люблю. Терпеть ненавижу весну и не особо люблю лето :)

А вообще - да, главное - отношение к жизни. Вон вчера на фламенке - руководитель выплясывал. По слухам, дядьке за 70. Знаете, что он там вытворял? Хрен кто из молодых повторит. И супруга его - ну королева, любой молодой фору даст, любо-дорого на тетеньку посмотреть, выложу фотки. Так что не депрессуйте раньше времени - старость наступает, когда пропадает интерес к жизни. С некоторыми это случается с 25, а с некоторыми - никогда :)
