Queen of hearts. The eternal Dhak Dhak girl. Madhuri Dixit continues to rule. She may have been away from the strobe lights of glamour, but her tantalizing appeal fails to diminish in the wake of fresh young talent. In fact, today she is looking fitter and even more radiant than even before. And of course she is dancing away to glory yet again in her comeback vehicle Aaja Nachle.

In a rare public appearance yesterday when she inaugurated a painting exhibition of young Painter Purnendy Mandal, Dixit spoke exclusively to IndiaFM about an illustrious career that most certainly signifies a very important era in Hindi films. There was a time when MF Hussain made paintings out of your Didi Tera Devar Deewana pose, today you are promoting a new artiste. Has life come full circle? “I think he was more obsessed with the film than me,” the muse laughed.

She was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas. But it would be fair to say that her last big hit was Yash Chopra's Dil To Pagal Hai. Be it Ek Do Teen from Tezaab, or the college going snooty babe opposite Aamir Khan in Dil, the heart-stopping Dhak Dhak moments in Beta or the charm personified family girl asking a lovestruck Salman Khan…Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. And of course her Pooja act in the poignant triangle tale in Saajan is as fresh as morning dew. How have things changed from Then to Now? “I don't believe in comparisons. Technology will always advance. Jo aaj hai voh kal nahin hoga. I don't look back. The kind of technology, sets, effects, camera work we had at that time, we still made good films. Today with the advancement in technology, we can make better movies, so I think it's wonderful,” Madhuri said.

Your dance moves made millions skip a heart beat. You also happened to have worked with a cross section of generations of choreographers. “It's like comparing one actress with another. Everybody approaches in his or her own way. Whether it is Farah Khan or Saroj Khan, they are all talented people. They all interpret dance in their own way. They all have the strengths. I look at the strengths and appreciate it. I worked with Saroj ji more so we have a connection there. We have given so many hits together. But that doesn't mean someone else is less good. They are all good.”

Her tryst with Yash Chopra was in Dil To Pagal Hai and she is working with the Yashraj banner in Aaja Nachle after a decade. Things have changed. Today they are the biggest factory in Bollywood churning out the biggest hits with an amazing consistency. “I don't think I'll call them factory. They make the films from their heart. They work very hard on every film they make. They try to do the best for the artistes, the technicians and that is wonderful. It's a wonderful company to work with. I am really really glad I am working with them. I am having fun working on this film (Aaja Nachle).” Could you reveal something about the role? “That you are not going to know. You'll have to come and watch the film,” Madhuri chuckles.

There was a time when Madhuri Dixit had put on weight. In fact Akshay Kumar jokingly called her 'moti' (fat) in Dil To Pagal Hai. But today when you look at her, it's a much trimmer and glowing Madhuri that gently sashays along making you go…Main shayar…tu meri shayari….oops….jumbling up the lyrics….Are we! But then that's the kind of effect she still manages to have. It was obvious to pop up the question about her fitness regimen and she laughs aloud that famous laughter-of-life in slow motion. “First of all I keep running after my kids. That in itself can get you in half your size. And of course there's a regimen that you have to keep because I am working in a movie. And me and my husband have decided that we have to be fit so that our kids are also the same.”

Alright, let's get back to movies again. Any film in the recent past that you've liked a lot? “It would be Bheja Fry. The comedy was very different from other films. It was not slapstick. It was a different sort of film when this guy walks in the house and then creates a mess. All the actors have done a brilliant job and kept the interest of the film going. It was wonderful.” And amongst the new crop of actors which are the ones that you find promising? “Vidya Balan and Konkona Sen Sharma. But I wouldn't say that I am very fair because I haven't seen many films off late.”

Well, that's an honest admission, but if you have to choose any one performance from your own films, which one will it be? “There are a lot of films which I look back with a lot of fondness whether they have done well or not done well. I can't really pinpoint one film. But I think my first film Abodh is closest, even though it didn't do well but I worked with the best people I've ever worked with i.e. the Rajshris. They introduced me to the movies. When Hum Aapke Hain Kaun happened, my joy doubled because they were the ones who had introduced me to films. And to work with them again and have such a big success was wonderful for me. In that sense every film has its own saga behind it,” Madhuri Dixit says getting into the nostalgic mode.

Your future plans? “I don't know yet,” she says flashing that high octane smile. We'd say, Aaja Nachle to that one. And maybe lots more….

Про Яшрадж фильмс: "Не думаю, что я назвала бы их фабрикой. Они делают фильмы от всего сердца. Они очень усердно работают над каждым фильмом, они делают все возможное для актеров, техников - и это чудесно. Это удовольствие - работать с ними. Я действительно счастлива, что работаю с ними и получаю истинное удовольствие от работы над фильмом".
Про роль в фильме Aaja Nachle “Вам не следует ничего знать. Придется прийти и посмотреть фильм".

По поводу поддержания отличной физической формы: "В первую очередь, я по-прежнему бегаю за детьми. Одно это способно сделать вас стройнее в два раза. Ну и конечно приходится придерживаться режима - я же в кино снимаюсь. Я и мой муж решили, что мы должны быть в форме, чтобы детям было с кого брать пример".

Фильм, который понравился в последнее время: “Bheja Fry. Это комедия, которая отличается от других... Все актеры проделали удесную работу." Про новое поколение актеров - кого она находит наиболее многообещающим: "Видью Балан и Конкона Сен Шарма. Но я бы не сказала, что я очень честна, поскольку последнее время видела не так уж много фильмов.

A beauty to reckon, virtuoso performer and excellent dancer, that's how actress Madhuri Dixit, who turns 40 Tuesday, will always be remembered by millions of her fans.

Her admirers are now eagerly awaiting her comeback film "Aaja Nachle". After a five-year hiatus, she steps under the arc lights to portray the role of a theatre artiste. Though she had many offers, she chose to work in the Yash Raj Films' project, directed by Anil Mehta.

Set in the theatre world, the film depicts the journey of an aging actress.Though she has played a dancer in films like "Tezaab" and "Dil To Paagal Hai", this is the first time she's playing a theatre artiste. The film is in its completion stage and may b screened at cinema halls in November.

The 'dhak dhak girl', as she is fondly called, danced her way into millions of hearts with the evergreen number "Ek do teen..." in "Tezaab" in 1988. Both the film and the song were smash hits.

"I hope I'm not sounding presumptuous or vain. I think like Sridevi, I was another heroine who could break the barriers between the classes and the masses," she was quoted as saying earlier.

Madhuri started her acting career with Kranthi Kumar's "Swati" in 1986 but then featured in dam squibs like "Abodh". It was "Tezaab" that launched her into the star league. Madhuri's career witnessed a meteoric rise after the film's phenomenal success.

Movie buffs remember her performances in songs like "Bada dukh dina ("Ram Lakhan"), "Dhak dhak" ("Beta"), "Chane ke kheth mein ("Anjaam"), "Choli ke peechche" ("Khalnayak"), and "Maar dala" ("Devdas").

"She is a wonderfully graceful dancer and never looks unbecoming, no matter how cheap the movements are," director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was quoted as saying in an interview while he was making "Devdas" with her.

He is a huge fan of Madhuri and claims she is the best dancer in Bollywood.

Apart from being a great dancer, Madhuri proved her acting skills in films like "Ram Lakhan", "Dil", "Parinda", "Khalnayak". She starred opposite Salman Khan in "Hum Aapke Hain Koun", which is often called the crowning glory of her career.

Madhuri also found a fan in renowned painter M.F. Husain, who later made a movie called "Gaja Gamini" - a tribute to the actress' beauty and talent. The two continue to be in touch.

She has won four Filmfare awards for Best Actress and was also honoured with the Best National Citizens Award in 2001.

Her career suffered a slide after "Anjaam", which was followed by a series of flops like "Raja" and "Rajkumar". She, however, did regain some ground with her performance in "Dil To Pagal Hai".

Bhansali's magnum opus "Devdas" became her swan song after which she joined her husband in the US and is now the proud mother of two sons.

"Aaja Nachle" will hopefully bring her more awards and accolades.

Глаз горит, лицом молодое - еще на фильмфэр было, я тогда удивлялась... такая красивая, еще красивее, чем когда уходила. А сейчас и фигуру сделала... Звязда. Дай бог, чтобы фильма была действительно хорошая.

Bollywood Queen Madhuri Dixit who is making a comeback in tinsel town with Yashraj films' 'Aaja Nachle' ushered in her birthday quietly with family members on Tuesday.

Madhuri who is married to US-based Dr Sriram Nene and is settled in Denver since her wedding in October 1999 is currently in Mumbai to shoot for 'Aaja Nachle' starring herself and Akshaye Khanna, her last film was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Devdas' which was released in 2002.

Madhuri spent her birthday with her children Arin and Ryan, her parents and in-laws.

Her husband Dr Nene is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai next week. She will wrap up the shooting of her film on May 20 and leave for the US with her family members, her business manager Rakeshnath said.

He said Madhuri has not taken a break for her birthday and is shooting. ''Only me and my wife were the non-family members who were part of the quiet family celebration, ‘’he added.

Madhuri's kids were with her throughout the shooting of her comeback film Aaja Nachle. "I made sure I shot the film during their holidays. I couldn't possibly leave them behind in the US. I wouldn't be able to concentrate on my work. I was very relaxed. If I didn't have the support of my children, my husband, my mom and my in-laws, I couldn't have done it . They flew down to India twice during the shooting. And my mom was with me throughout. Ram was down in Mumbai twice because he and the kids missed each other."

Madhuri Dixit has changed enormously. From being a polite but reserved almost aloof entity on her sets, Madhuri has become ultra-gregarious. "Children do that to you," she says. "My sons have made me a fun person. Besides that, all the experiences that you go through in life make you mature, you realise life doesn't have to be taken seriously all the time. My sons keep me on my toes," she adds.

After Aaja Nachle Madhuri now has her fingers crossed. "Aaja Nachle has spoilt me. Yashraj treated me with such care!" Now what she does next will depend on what's offered to her and where it is shot. Her only demand — a strong and special script.

Gloating over her Aaja Nachle experience Madhuri wonders if she'll have the same experience next time she shoots. She gushes, "I wonder if the experience will be as pleasurable! And if my kids have kept me relaxed, the entire crew of Aaja Nachle has been an inspiration and delight. They're so young, bright and raring to go. I'm so lucky I got to work with them!" Absolutely delighted by the current crop of actors and technicians in Hindi cinema Madhuri says, "There are such a wide variety of films being made right now with such wonderful actors! What a delightful performance Vinay Pathak has given in Bheja Fry. It was so funny!"

Madhuri had done some comedy in Raja and though it was fun, she thinks it's tough. How does she keep in touch with the kind of films that are being made? She says, "I try to see as many films as possible. But there're more films being made than I can watch. We cannot complain about the quality. My director Anil Mehta has wonderful eye for detail. Having been a cinematographer with so many directors, he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it from every artiste. I had my fingers crossed and my heart in my mouth when I started shooting for Aaja Nachle. Anything could've gone wrong. But touchwood, it was smooth sailing."

She's all praise for Yashraj. "They were thoroughly professional even when I worked with them ten years ago in Dil To Pagal Hai. Now they're even more organised. Everything runs so smoothly like well-oiled machinery. I've the highest regards for Mr Yash Chopra and Mr Sooraj Barjatya."

Tell her Sooraj is still looking for another Madhuri after Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, she quips, "He doesn't have to look for another, I'm right here! Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was certainly a landmark. If Mr Subhash Ghai hadn't signed me for Ram Lakhan I'd have gone back to my studies. I guess Hum Aapke Hain Kaun was really special. Suddenly after that I became a part of everyone's household. I suddenly had old women hugging me and pinching my cheeks. I guess I've been lucky, I always got the right opportunity at the right time."

Сыновья держат меня в тонусе" - говорит она.

После Aaja Nachle Мадхури держит пальцы скрещенными. "Aaja Nachle баловал меня. Яшрадж обращались со мной с такой заботой!" Что она будет делать теперь - зависит от того, что ей предложат, и где будут съемки. Единственное требование - сильный и особый сценарий.

What could be a better treat for a woman who has been slogging for months! Madhuri Dixit’s heart went dhak dhak when Sriram Nene flew in from the United States and announced that they were flying out to Mauritius, with kids Arin, Ryan and the Dixit parents. Needless to say that Madhuri just jumped at the offer. The well-deserved break came after a four-month gruelling shooting schedule for Yash Raj's Aaja Nachle.

A long holiday in Mauritius, for the entire family before Madhuri goes back to her full-time job of managing her home and kids back in Denver, was a welcome idea. Her secretary and close aid for years, Riku Rakeshnath informed, "Madhuri was extremely delighted by the surprise her husband, Nene, sprung up. He has taken the kids and Madhuri's parents along for a long holiday in Mauritius. After which they will return home in America."

We hear even the kids Aarin and Ryan couldn't cope with the humid climate. Sources close to Madhuri tell that the kids were simply shuffling between their respective schools and home. They hardly went for outings. Says the source, "The kids were also becoming grumpy. They were uncomfortable with the weather here. Also, she could hardly take them out. This holiday will rejuvenate them."

Madhuri will be back in town only around the release of her film, Aaja Nachle in October this year.

Having completed filming of Aaja Nachle, Madhuri boarded a flight back to her hometown Denver with her boys last Monday belying gossip that she would stay back and revive her film career.

23 May 2007 (Sawf News) - Three months to make Aaja Nachle with Yashraj Films and Madhuri Dixit, 40, has got a taste of the good old gossip mill in Bollywood.

As she came close to winding up her comeback film Aaja Nachle, the media was abuzz with gossip that she would stay on in India and reinvent her career because of 'cracks' in her eight-year-old marriage to Dr. Sriram Nene in Denver, CO, USA.

Monday (21 May 2007), all these rumors were proved just feathers-in-the-wind without any substance. After completing the last few shoots of her film Madhuri, like a true Marathi girl, gave an interview to all local Marathi papers in which she gave her reasons for coming to Bollywood.

"The offer from Yashraj Films was good," she said in her parting remarks, "In the past three months, so many offers have come my way but I will come back only if Aaja Nachle becomes a hit. I will come back once to do any patchwork if needed as the film goes into post-production work. I came during the holidays of my two sons. The elder, four-year-old Arin is missing home already. I have to catch up on his homework before school reopens. I have to be back to my routine in Denver. I realize that eight years have passed since I went off to the US. Things have changed in the film industry. Technology is far superior now and I had to get used to new inventions and methods. I worked from 7 am to 8 pm every day, shooting and rehearsing my dance sequences. But I have done well with the support of my family – particularly my husband who was very encouraging. I know age is catching up. In some distant future, I am willing to do roles of elder women – mother may be – provided they are central to the theme of the film.

After all, no less an actor than Amitabh Bachchan has shown the way for all of us!"

Madhuri boarded a flight for Denver with her boys Arin, 4, and Ryan, 2 last Monday and was excited about her reunion with Dr. Nene who would meet her at the airport!

Madhuri Dixit is back in the movies.

There’s nothing as mood enhancing as watching yummy mummy Madhuri Dixit in action. Her face is a map of expressions. Watching her after years in front of the still or moving camera makes me forget the oppressive heat. I want to go out in the hot sun and zing.

Circa 1992, I first met her on the sets of Khel at Filmistan studios. Beta had just been declared a super-duper hit. Without the luxury of a mobile phone or a RP person to set up interviews, my colleague and I rang up the studio and found out that queen bee was getting jiggy with it. Saroj Khan was choreographing the dance sequence. In a macabre set which looked like a cross between an outlandish Xanadu and a cat house, there she was in an ill-fitting outfit. She did her jig like only she could. A zillion volts flashed across that sultry studio. I recall her father Shankar Dixit, with his nose buried in a Reader’s Digest, unmindful of the oohs and aahs as his fabulous daughter reduced men to mush. My first interview with the reigning diva. Madhuri made excruciating copy. A journalist’s trial by fire. I struggled, I survived. And I came home zinging to Idlee doo.

I was a convert. No two ways about that. You just had to love Madhuri Dixit aka MD. Unflappable and cool, she had carefully built a picket fence around her. There was this much she’d answer, no more probing. Off-record, she made better copy. But she was always circumspect, guarded but friendly.

Then the meetings became more frequent. I saw MD dazzle through the ghastly Dil Tera Aashiq. As a rookie reporter, I’d bump into her on the sets of Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!, Koyla, Dil To Pagal Hai. She still made vegetarian copy. She’s worked with the most mercurial lot of actors – Nana Patekar, Salman Khan – yet remained glacier cool. I remember Salman trying his juvenile antics but she’d fix him with an icy stare.
Madhuri Dixit, unlike Hema Malini or Kajol, was never imperious, rude or standoffish. She was just to the manner born, the queen of all she surveyed. Perhaps that was misconstrued as hauteur. She was hot which was uber cool as far as the box office was concerned.

Then on the Devdas sets, I saw a different MD. The Dola re dola song was being canned. Aishwarya Rai was fretting over her costume. I could see that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was in awe of MD. He never directly communicated with her. Every time, she’d give a superlative shot, he’d make some expression which I figured was akin to a thumbs-up signal.

I’ve yet to see MD high-strung or heat up like other heroines are wont to be. Every time the barbs or accusations hurt her, she’d turn even more calm. No flicker of anger, the eyes would betray no trace of pain. She was a seasoned performer. Emotions were only meant for the camera or the confines of her three bedroom home in Juhu.

Like a story book queen, she gathered the folds of her dappled gharara and walked into the gilded sunset with Shriram Nene. And there was a sea change. MD had become less guarded. She spoke what she thought but still never tread on any corns. And as always, there was a sangfroid.

She took off to the US to be with her Cardiothoracic surgeon husband. But the MD frenzy continued post Devdas. She stayed away. For a good five years. The plum roles went to other less-deserving actors. Which is a pity, because somewhere along the way, she had discovered her mйtier. Rajkumar Santoshi’s unwatchable Lajja was redeemed by a knockout performance from MD. Mrityudand saw her plumb the subtext of her character which even Prakash Jha hadn’t imagined. Everyone I know in showbiz, from Tabu to Rani Mukerji, and from Shabana Azmi to Gauri Khan is an unabashed Madhuri Dixit buff.

And then Arin (4) and Ryan (2) were born. I hoped providence would intervene and get her back to the whirligig. And it happened. In the form of Aaja Nachle and Aditya Chopra. Her first question to Aditya Chopra, “Do you think people really want to see me?” See her? We wanted to savour her, watch her do the hup, two, three. No one dhak-dhakked liked her. Save for a Kajol or Tabu, all we were left with were botoxed bimbettes who could only talked about L’Oreal, Max Factor and abusive boyfriends. Her co-stars like Kunal Kapoor are tongue-tied in her presence. Konkona Sen Sharma, Akshaye Khanna and Ranvir Shorey were the fresh MD converts on the Aaja Nachle sets.

I hope Step Mom, The Devil Wears Prada, Terms Of Endearment and Bridges of Madison County will be made with her. Besides Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Raat Aur Din and Guide, which on repeated viewings seem tailor made only for MD. Madhuri has lost oodles of post-pregnancy fat and still looks like a Boticelli painting on a warm April afternoon.

Right at this moment, there she is in an ill-fitting kurta, Ryan saddled on her waist, she’s just back from a super mall. Back home, Ryan lisps “Dhoom macha.” Both her sons Arin and Ryan are Dhoom fans. Arin, the older and more voluble of the two kids, zips around like a dervish. He demands every moment of his mum’s attention. Ryan shows me his Spider-Man toys before he retires into his playpen. Madhuri smiles that dhak dhak smile of hers. Only this time, the erotic charge is missing. It’s maternal and reassuring.

Outside, the din of the Juhu traffic melds into an occasional afternoon hum. It seems like old times. Like those giddy-headed times of yore we yammer away. The reticent Aditya Chopra won’t allow her to speak about Aaja Nachle but I can fathom it’s a role written specially for her. MD will joust and shimmy only like she can. She laughs, “Yeah, acting is a bit like cycling. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you just peddle on. I was initially nervous. But the unit was more than supportive. Plus Anilji (Mehta) is one of the coolest directors I’ve worked with. He’s just so easy and hassle free. Acting is in my bloodstream, so I’ll never really forget it.

But desperate she isn’t. Once she wraps up shooting, she’ll be off to the US, only to return in October for promotions of her film. She says matter-of-factly, “I’ve been away from Ram for five months. But he’s been so supportive. I’ll do movies in my own free time. I can’t uproot my children constantly. So I guess for this year Aaja Nachle is it. Let’s see what happens about the other projects I’ve been offered. As of now, I haven’t committed to anything.” She continues, “Acting is about passion. You have to be passionate and single-minded about it. It can devour you, you must find ownership.”

About the current movies, she’s fulsome praise for Hrithik Roshan’s performance in Dhoom: 2. “He was wonderful in the film. His body language, the theraav were amazing. I even loved Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The chemistry between Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi is terrific. Even the ensemble cast of RDB was just too good,” she says gleefully. She tells me she immensely enjoyed the recently released Bheja Fry as well.

It’s almost cinematic. I sense Madhuri’s evolution post-marriage almost like a slowly developing photograph in a dark room. She smiles, “I discovered love after marriage. I feel liberated. Earlier I was so cautious about what I said and where I went. But Ram is the exact opposite of me. He can make friends anywhere. Earlier I was very intimidated, I’d never get the right words to express myself. Ram is so vocal that even I have begun to articulate my thoughts better, I speak more freely now. In the US, I can just take the car and drive to any mall and pick up stuff. I could never dream of doing it while I was in India.” And she uses an inexcusable Americanism, “Ram really helped me to chill.”

Harking back to her salad days, MD recalls, “I was so wrapped up in my work that the attendant frills never bothered me. I never socialized, threw parties, made great friends on the sets. You remember, I barely had a fashion sense. Like I said, I’ve opened up much more these days. I’ve become easy with myself and people around me. And I have to credit Ram for all the positive changes in me.”

Almost laughing at the memory, MD says, “Even today, when I leave for a shoot or shopping in some strange ill-fitting kurta, Ram will sweetly say, ‘Wear something better, you’re a star, dress up na.’”

I use the word empower advisedly. But one senses that Madhuri Dixit feels empowered post marriage. When I tell her that, she laughs that Li’l Miss Sunshine laugh of hers. “Empowerment? Hmmm, let me think. I think empowerment means the ability to face up to your responsibilities. Marriage has made me understand commitment better. Despite being so dissimilar, Ram and I are so similar. Sometimes I think I really lucked out with him. He’s a companion who completes me.”

So how does her hublet handle the long spells of absence? She answers, “He’s the one who advised me to continue with my career in my own space and time. He keeps reassuring me. He says, ‘Even I’m away for days on end when I have my surgeries and you have to manage the home and kids alone.’”

About Ram being known as Madhuri Dixit’s husband, she says, “Hey,that happens only in India. Back home in the US, I’m known as Mrs. Nene. So there.” With a glint in her eye she says she’d recommend marriage to everyone. “But only when they are ready for it,” she warns adding. “Parents shouldn’t coerce their children to marry because there’s really no right time. My parents never forced me. Luckily for me, the right man came along at the right time.”

And then there are the children who reduce her to gush and goo every waking minute. She says, “It kills me to be away from them especially when I’m shooting. I feel disoriented and so do they. I tell you, they have me wrapped around their little fingers. Just the other day Arin got me a flower from school and cooed, ‘I love you mommy.’ My heart melted.”

More lessons in parenting: “My kids make me so vulnerable, especially when they are unwell. I’m constantly reduced to a heap of tears. Sometimes, I’m just at a loss when I can’t figure out why they’re crying. And then my mom who’s so instinctive says, ‘Maybe Ryan has a stomach ache,’ and sure enough it turns out to be just that. It’s crazy how you understand parents better once your own children come along. I remember as a kid, I’d be lolling around the bed and mom would be hollering that I was upsetting all the neatly folded clothes on the bed. Today, when Arin and Ryan upset and overturn the laundry, I just roll my eyes and feel that I’m getting a taste of my own medicine.”

Laughing some more she says, “My kids are my stress givers and stress busters. Arin’s picking up some broken Hindi and Marathi as well.”

Madhuri has her own ideas about bringing up the babies, “I really want them to grow up as complete, well-adjusted individuals. I’d love them to be sporty, outdoorsy kind of kids. Which is why I don’t want my shooting schedules to upset their school and studies. So my kids and my husband will always be my first priority.”

Ryan saunters up to his mom and plonks himself on her lap. Arin shows me pictures of his birthday party where Star Wars was the theme for the do.

Queen bee slips into another avatar as effortlessly as she moves from one character to another. Outside the shadows of the evening are lengthening, the frames of mommie dearest and kids swirl like clouds in my head. Yummy mummy Madhuri Dixit’s life like most successful potboilers comes with a happy ending.

In which remake would you like to see Madhuri?

Karan Johar
Definitely Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam. Of course, in Meena Kumari’s role. The beauty, gravitas and subtext she will lend to it would be beautiful.

Kunal Kohli
As film-makers we should think of new subjects for Madhuri, she’s such a powerhouse of talent. I’d rather show her ina way she or anyone else hasn’t been seen before.

Madhur Bhandarkar
I would like to remake Ketan Mehta’s Mirch Masala and cast Madhuri in Smita Patil’s character of Sonbai who defies the subhedaar’s lust and unifies the village women to fight him. A power-packed performance, keeping the dignity of a woman. Madhuri would be apt!

Rakeh Roshan
I’d love to see her in a version of Khoon Bhari Maang. She’s at the right stage in her life to do a complex role like that.

Vikram Bhaat
A slight older Sound Of Music. Some music, some laughter, some romance. Madhuri would be ideal. Then of course, there’s Fedora. She’d be perfect to add enigma to that character.

Vipul Shah
Guide, Ghar and my version of Aankhen. Whether she plays Rosie in Guide or the traumatized housewife in Ghar, Madhuri can bring grace and dignity to the most complex roles.

Ashutosh Gowariker
I don’t like to do remakes. I would like to see her in my next film called Shakuntala.

Madhuri Dixit has completed Yash Raj Films “Aaja Nachle”. Mads is settled in Denver since her wedding in October 1999. Her last film was Sanjay Leela Bhansali's “Devdas” in 2002. In an interview with TWF correspondent Vickey Lalwani, she talks about her comeback film, stay in Mumbai, husband, kids and future plans.

Describe your role in Aaja Nachle?
I am sorry. I am not supposed to talk anything about it. But I must say that it has been a very satisfying experience to work in this film.

What is the extent of offers that have come your way since you came to Mumbai for Aaja Nachle?
The extent is really very big. But I don't want to do every film. I want to do films and roles which will satisfy my creative instincts and worthy of buying a ticket in a theatre.

But my first priority will always be my family. I will always consider where the film is being shot and if it is covenient for me to shoot in that place. Frankly, I will work at my own pace.

Will you play a mom or a mother-in-law?
Why not?

Why did you refuse Saroj Khan's film? She has been your mentor...
(Interrupts) I did not refuse her film because I was never offered that film. I don't know how these rumours started.

So there's no fall-out with Saroj Khan?
Sarojji is family to me.

But she is not doing the choreography of Aaja Nachle, like she did in almost your films?
Well, Yash Raj Films has put everything in place. And I didn't want to interfere in that. Vaibhavi Merchant is doing the choreography and she is very good.

Have the work ethics changed in Bollywood from the days you got married and took a break?
Tremendously. Almost everybody has become very organised. Yash Raj Films were very organised even before, but now they are super organised (laughs). The technology has become wonderful and that really helps.

Have the actors become punctual?
(laughs) Yes. I think the corporate culture has paid good dividends.

The heroines have changed. They are doing bold roles and have bold scenes. Would you have been able to do it, if you were younger and in the thick of things now?
I haven't faced that situation. Hmmm... if I would have seen that the director is good and can handle the scene well, I may have done it. But I tell you, this boldness is a reflection of the society. Films reflect society.

Your relationship with Dr. Nene became a long distance one, courtesy Aaja Nachle? Was it tough?
No. Distance makes the heart grow fonder (laughs). Plus, Sriram and I have our mobiles and we were in touch.

Did you get mobbed in the city when you went out during this stay?
To be honest, most of the days I have been shooting, and my life is restricted from home to studios and back. I went for a few movies with my kids-Arin, Ryan- and once to the Juhu beach. Many people came up to say hello, but nobody became unruly or misbehaved.

Did Arin and Ryan see other places in Mumbai?
They did. Sriram was here for some time, and he took them out to the Gateway of India and Taraporevala Aquarium. They also visited many malls. It's wonderful to see that Mumbai has changed so much in the past few years.

Have Arin and Ryan started seeing your films?
No. They have seen only Devdas. In fact, they saw some other films in Mumbai- Bheja Fry, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Dhoom2. They sat through all of them. Apparently, they love Hindi films. Good na?

Did you catch up with your Bollywood friends during this stay? Any regrets that you couldn't meet someone?
I met up with all those whom I wanted to meet. I met Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Ahmed Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta...the list is really long. No regrets at all.

New actors who have impressed you and you think they'll go a long way?
Konkona Sen Sharma, Kangana Ranaut- she was awesome in Gangster, Priyanka Chopra, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shourey and Riteish Deshmukh.

When are you coming back to India?
From whatever I have been given to understand, Aaja Nachle will release sometime around Diwali. I will be coming sometime before its release - for the promotional activities.

Насчет того, как она проводила время в Мумбаи - говорит, что в основном работала, пару раз гуляла с детьми по пляжу в Джуху, многие подходили поздороваться, но все вели себя прилично и не надоедали. Муж, когда навещал ее в Мумбаи, возил детей к Воротам Индии и океанарий. Также они посещали множество торгово-развлекательных центров. И вообще, приятно видеть, как изменился Мумбаи за несколько лет. Ее фильмы дети не смотрят, видели только Девдас. Но в Мумбаи они посмотрели Bheja Fry, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Dhoom2. Причем посмотрели от начала до конца - наверно им понравились фильмы на хинди :)

Встречалась ли она с кем-то из старых болливудских друзей - да, со всеми, с кем хотела - с Шахом, Анилом, Акшаем Кханной, Ахмедом Кханом, Рани, прити... Список очень длинный. Madhuri Dixit down with chicken pox

Madhuri Dixit Nene has taken ill. Her business manager Rikku Rakesh Nath has confirmed the news that Madhuri has been unwell and is suffering from chicken pox.

The former Bollywood queen, now settled in the US after marriage is making a comeback with the much talked about film ‘Aaja Nachle’, produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by ace lensman Anil Mehta.

Jaideep Sahni has brought in a whiff of originality by scripting successful movies like JUNGLE, COMPANY, BUNTY AUR BABLI and not to forget this year’s KHOSLA KA GHOSLA. But he has really scooped his way to fame and glory with the globally successful CHAK DE! INDIA. More than the blockbuster worldwide acceptance, it is the critical acclaim and accolades that have made Jaideep a name to reckon with in the film industry.

However life moves on for this creative genius and he is already focused on his next Yash Raj project, the Madhuri Dixit starrer, AAJA NACHLE. Not willing to disclose much about the contents of the movie, he says, it’s another script based on personal experiences, this time during his engineering days in Bidar (a small town in Karnataka). On further coaxing Jaideep relents a little and discloses that the movie is about what happens when a new thing (?) comes to a small town!

The much awaited Madhuri Dixit comeback vehicle, AAJA NACHLE, is all set to storm the theaters on 30th November.

“Chak De has become an anthem. It’s a great feeling to be a part of a film that has become so big,” says Sulaiman Merchant of music composer duo Salim-Sulaiman who has composed music of films like Chak De India, Iqbal, Dor and Kaal. They also happen to be the first choice for designing the background score of some of the biggest films in tinsel town. Obviously they are excited about making Madhuri Dixit dance to their tunes in Yash Raj’s next Aaja Nachle. But there’s something unique they’ve attempted in Aaja Nachle that has never been done in Bollywood before.

“In Aaja Nachle we have composed a 25 minute play written in nautanki style, something that small town people can associate with. It has been produced in new world, western theatrical style, the kind of stuff you get to see in Broadway or theatres in West. It’s produced and done in the same style. The sadness, the pain, the fights, everything has been told in a musical format. There were 9-10 singers and 7-8 actors who’ve dubbed their own voices,” Sulaiman said excitedly. This 25 minute play has been written by veteran theatre personality and actor Piyush Mishra (If you’ve seen the latest Greenply ad on telly, then he is the lawyer who’s asking for ‘suboot’).

Elaborating on the music score of Aaja Nachle, Sulaiman says that it’s not the typical “Madhuri numbers. It is one step beyond what Madhuri has done. It has a classical base with contemporary style. There are a variety of songs. There’s an English song, a slow song. There are a wide array of singers like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sunidhi. The music releases on 18th October.”

Salim-Sulaiman have also been associated with Merchants of Bollywood, a musical choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant that is all set to start its third season in various European countries. Incidentally, Vaibhavi has accused Morani Brothers of ‘stealing’ their idea for the much hyped Miss Bollywood starring Shilpa Shetty. “It’s a massive production. If we would have tried to play the music live then we would have required a 100 piece orchestra,” Sulaiman says.

The talented duo feels strongly about the penchant for plagiarism that is common in the music industry in India. “Our population is one billion, can’t we come up with something original. That’s so sad.” Sulaiman feels the duo would like to do quality films like Dor, Iqbal, Chak De India and Aaja Nachle rather than taking up too many projects. Their next few films include Roadside Romeo (Jugal Hansraj’s film, a joint production with Disney) and Cootchie Coothcie Hota Hai (Karan Johar’s animation film).

Diwali used to be loads of fun in childhood. The entire process leading up to Diwali, of spring cleaning, making savouries and other preparations used to be so much fun. There would be festive air all over the place and the aroma of chaklis and chivdas being made still makes me nostalgic. We as children used to visit houses
Diwali was so special during childhood because it was associated with the diwali vacation too. Diwali simply suggests unbounded joy and everything new.

I totally miss celebrating Diwali in Mumbai. Bursting crackers, meeting people, and even that ambience is so sorely missed by me. We do celebrate Diwali here, but it is obviously not like back home. We don’t even get crackers here in Denver! We try and make up for the lack of the atmosphere in Mumbai by wearing nice traditional clothes and having lot of sweets.

Madhuri returns to Mumbai to promote 'Aaja Nachle'Pune, Nov 14 (IANS) Madhuri Dixit who was apparently not satisfied with her comeback film "Aaja Nachle" will nevertheless be in Mumbai to promote it after Yash Chopra persuaded her to do so.
The actor, who lives in the US, will be in Mumbai Wednesday to attend the promotional events for "Aaja Nachle" that releases Nov 30, Chopra said here Tuesday during a visit to accept the Zenith Asia award for his contribution to cinema at a ceremony organised by the National Films Archives of India.

Apparently, the actress felt Yash Raj Films did not deliver the promised goods and therefore refused to promote "Aaja Nachle".

Chopra, who gave her a makeover in his super hit "Dil To Paagal Hai", had a tough time convincing her to change her mind.

The director said his son Aditya met Madhuri in Detroit last year and convinced her to make a comeback with their film. She accepted the offer and came to Mumbai from the US, where she lives with her husband Sriram Nene and their two children. She was in India for almost seven months to complete the film.

The actor had taken a sabbatical after "Devdas" and will be seen in a film after five years.

Chopra, who hasn't directed any film after his cross-border love saga "Veer-Zaara", also talked about his forthcoming venture which he plans to start in January next year.
"I don't direct too many films these days because I am short of ideas. I can only make romantic movies. I'm finalising the script for my next film. I cannot make action movies and that is why Yash Raj produces movies made by young and talented directors," Chopra told IANS.

He is also looking forward to Yash Raj Films animation movie "Road Side Romeo", which is being made in collaboration with Walt Disney. Chopra doesn't want to compromise on quality and has allocated a huge budget for the film, which is expected to release sometime in June next year.
He said: "For the first time, we have an Indian animation movie with the quality of Disney animation."

A 'comeback' film always holds significance. Dilip Kumar [KRANTI], Amitabh Bachchan [MRITYUDAATA], Vinod Khanna [INSAAF], Dimple Kapadia [SAAGAR], Mumtaz [AANDHIYAAN] and Kajol [FANAA] are names you cannot erase from your memory since the celebrated actors returned to the big screen after a hiatus.

With AAJA NACHLE, Madhuri Dixit, who reigned supreme, is back to the studios with the Numero Uno production house of the country. Does the actress still possess the charisma to ignite fire in water? Also, does the vehicle she chooses to make a comeback with, have the fuel to reach the winning post?

Sadly, AAJA NACHLE is below the mediocre mark and doesn't meet the humungous expectations that you associate with the Yashraj - Madhuri combo. What's the problem? Without a doubt, the script! What starts off as a story that seems real and identifiable becomes a fairy tale in the latter hour. Also, with a title like AAJA NACHLE and the story harping on music, the songs had to be chartbusters. That's just not the case here!

In short, AAJA NACHLE fails in the two vital departments -- writing and music. The film doesn't make your heart go dhak-dhak, nor does it prompt you to break into a nach at the end of the show.

After nearly a decade, an unexpected phone call shakes Dia [Madhuri Dixit] out of her dance rehearsal in New York. Makarand [Darshan Zariwala], her guru, is dying and she must return to Shamli, a town in India. The town where she grew up, the town where she learnt to live and to dance. Also the town she left on an impulse, severing ties with her parents and her people.

It is a poignant and troubled return; not only has her guru passed away but the institution that he so lovingly nurtured is in decay and under threat of demolition. Ajanta theatre, the once vibrant hub of the community, the place where Dia's fondest memories are embedded, must now be brought down because the local political authorities feel it a waste of prime real estate.

With the help of Doctor [Raghuvir Yadav], the caretaker of Ajanta, Dia sets out on a mission to prevent the destruction and resurrect the spirit of Ajanta. In an atmosphere of mistrust, ridicule and active hostility, Dia picks up the gauntlet and agrees to achieve the near impossible task of putting together a theatrical production. She must also ensure that every member of the production is from Shamli town. She has only two months to prove her point or the bulldozers will be waiting.

Bearing a striking similarity to the Brazilian film XUXA REQUEBRA, Jaideep Sahni's screenplay is the biggest culprit here. The protagonist [Madhuri] knows that there would be hurdles galore on her way, as she embarks on a journey to realize her guru's dreams. But she hardly struggles to achieve the impossible. Even the corrupt politician [Akhilendra Mishra] or the shrewd businessman [Irrfan], who could've proved to be tough nuts to crack, give in so easily.

Besides, the goings-on get too unbelievable. The first question that crosses your mind is, how does Madhuri raise the funds to put up this spectacular event [the set design in the penultimate song is marvellous]? Okay, that's a cinematic liberty, but, seriously, there should've been at least some reference to where the money would flow in to fund this mammoth, lavish and extravagant event. What starts off as a 'real' film, drifts into a 'surreal' world as it moves ahead.

Debutante director Anil Mehta knows the importance of frames/visuals since he's an accomplished cinematographer. But Mehta ought to know by now that it's the content that does the talking eventually. The writing is too commonplace to make any impact whatsoever. In an effort to strike a balance between believable and make-believe, AAJA NACHLE falls like a pack of cards.

Salim-Sulaiman's music is another minus point. You expect the songs to linger in your memory even after the show has ended… that's what makes a musical tick, right? It's not the case here. Dialogues are wonderful at places, especially the ones delivered by Akshaye Khanna and Madhuri. Cinematography [Mohanan] is splendid.

Madhuri has always delivered qualitative performances and the fire continues to burn to this date. She's top notch, but how one wishes the script would've done justice to her talent. It doesn't offer her a pedestal to take that big leap. The loyal Madhuri fans would surely feel disillusioned and saddened.

Akshaye Khanna is tremendous. In fact, it's a treat to watch Madhuri and Akshaye together, after a hiatus. Kunal Kapoor is likable; he enacts his part with natural ease. Konkona is nice, but when compared to her previous work, it's definitely not in that league.

Irrfan, in a brief role, is okay. Divya Dutta too is relegated to the backseat. Ranvir Shorey is first-rate. Ditto for Raghuvir Yadav. Darshan Zariwala does a fine job. Yashpal Sharma is alright. Vinay Pathak and Sushmita Mukherjee are adequate. Akhilendra Mishra is as usual. Jugal Hansraj gets no scope. Vinod Nagpal and Uttara Baokar, as Madhuri's parents, have nothing much to do. Felix D'Alviella [as Steve -- Madhuri's lover] is passable.

On the whole, AAJA NACHLE disappoints big time. At the box-office, the film has embarked on a poor start and coupled with weak merits will only emerge as one of the major disappointments of the year.
